I still find myself getting mixed up between groups, models, equations, columns, etc. A diagram showing all the various things that can be edited by users might be the best way to convey this.

Hi Nils,

A bit off-topic, but some people have been toying with the idea of a "grammar of tables" (in the same vein as the "grammar of graphics" that ggplot2 succesfully implements). That would probably be the best abstraction to represent the different features of estout. Sadly, no one has written anything like it (AFAIK) :(

I think frmttable by John Luke Gallup goes a bit in this direction (see http://www.stata-journal.com/article.html?article=sg97_5). Re "diagram": good idea, but no time right now... sorry
