Transaction fee can no longer be set #212

In the past I could set my own transaction fee for transactions. This option
appears to be gone.

Forthemore the security update (3.15) just sent itself a transaction with a fee
without asking me - it basically stole money without asking, which I don't
think is ever okay.

Hi Stefan,

the app always calculates the minimal fee for you - no need to set it yourself.
Sorry, won't fix.

The wallet securing transaction was needed for, well, securing your wallet. If
it would have asked first, and - as in your case - you would only have noticed
today (6 days late), your balance would likely to have been stolen completely.
So, pick your fate.

I want to be able to send transactions with my own fee. Maybe even below what
you think is minimal. That feature was there in past versions, I don't see why
you needed to remove it.

I understand the need for the "securing transaction". I still don't think
spending money without user interaction is a good idea. What about a pop-up?

About the "6 days late". The transaction happened 20 minutes ago as this was
when I updated bitcoin wallet. Luckily noone was interested in stealing my
bitcoins so they were still there.

It was not a feature. The app/bitcoinj was just not able to calculate the fee.
So the user had to guess. I'm afraid I won't change this, unless Bitcoin fee
rules change as a whole. However, I invite you to build your own version of the
app. It's all open source!

You're lucky your coins have not been stolen. The securing transaction did not
spend your Bitcoins. It just moved them to a new, secure address in the same
wallet. I'm aware that taking such an action on the users behalf is not to be
taken lightly. But believe me, in this case it's the better thing to do. Most
users won't see or care of popups, notifications, etc. Again, if you're unhappy
with how such situations are dealt with, I invite you to fork the app.
