Comparing the Win32/64 vs Ubuntu login shows that my Windows instance
created the account as user@api.twitter.com, whereas my ubuntu showed
user@twitter.com.
Debug showed that the problem was "page not found" when trying to
register/log-in, so I changed the account username to user@api.twitter.com
under ubuntu, and it worked fine.
So, the issue appears that twitter held on to an outdated method until last
week, but has cleaned it up.
tl;dr: change your twitter account username to user@api.twitter.com

for what it's worth...

.. I did indeed try that back then in Oct-2012 and it didn't work for me. I've
just been using the www.twitter.com webapp since then :-/
