I'll try to provide reproducible steps here, but the central idea is this: when the last monster in a group dies in such a way that scrolling is no longer necessary, the scroll bar disappears (this makes sense). Problematically, though, the list-view doesn't reset so that everything is visible. So if the view is scrolled down, the top is not accessible.
Resizing the window doesn't help. Adding a monster or group so that the scrollbar re-appears does.
