can't access public offline gmail with IE8 #912

Gears 0.5.28.0

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Login to gmail.com 
2. Enable gears and allow for install and syncing to finish
3. Disable network connection
4. Launch gmail offline by clicking on the shortcut created in step 2

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The page doesn't load.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Vista Enterprise SP1 (32-bit)
