google reader offline mode : clicking on any subscription gives error message

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Login to google reader
2. Enable offline mode (if not already enabled, also make sure google gears 
is already installed)
3. Disable network connection
4. go back to google reader and click on any subscription item on left side

What is the expected output? 
no error message seen

What do you see instead?
message seen : "sorry an unexpected condition has occurred which is 
preventing Google reader from fulfilling the request" 

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Browser : IE7
Google Gears : 0.5.29.0
OS : Vista SP1 VMware Image

Reproducible in Mac also

Reproducible on windows vista - FF3.0.13 with gears 0.5.32.0 as well but 
inconsistently.
