The link seems to suggest to me that by not using https and clearing the cache
the
problem will be resolved, but this does not appear to be the case for me.

I think clearing all Google cookies is even more important than clearing the
cache.
If you already did this I don't have other hints, then you'll have to wait for
the
Gears team to answer. ;-)

I just upgraded to FF 3.5.1 (already had Gears 0.5.30) and can't access gmail.
It
loops as mentioned previously by others. I had no problems access gmail with FF
3.0.12 which was using earlier. If I disable Gears, problem goes away. Help

I have just started suffering from this problem as well.
IE8, all windows updates.
Only one google account ever used on this PC.
Cookies deleted.
Works fine in firefox, but its impossible to use gmail in IE.
