I've tried to use gears for offline gmail and it just won't work.
Here's what i've done:
1) I click on the 'offline' link in the small tool bar.
2) A popup shows and i click on 'next'
3) Then i get another popup (asking if i want links etc.) and immediately,
beneath
this popup a dialog-div shows up saying:
"Install offline access for Gmail"
"Failed to load required resources"
"Failed to enable local store"
Subsequent enabling of offline mail yields no result. the syncing lasts forever
and
never progresses.
I'ts worthless this way...
Here's what i've got:
OS: Windows XP pro (all the latest patches)
APP: Firefox v3.5.2
ADDON: better Gmail 2 (v0.9.3)
ADDON: Blank Canvas Gmail Signatures v1.11.12

Well, I got it working, but it's for Chrome or Chromium users only. All I had
to do
was change channels to beta from dev channel and it worked. Of course, now I
can't
use my bookmark sync, but that's why I have chrome and chromium installed. I
assume
gmail would also work fine on chrome release channel.
Hope it helps anyone still stuck on this issue

Mine has been working on the dev channel of chrome (4.0.213.1). The version
before
4.0.211.1 (i think) it was not working for.

I was seeing this in Firefox 3.5.2. My setting for "Accept third-party
cookies"
option was deselected. I changed this to selected (i.e. allow third-party
cookies),
reattempted offline gmail install and it worked this time.
I haven't dug deeply enough to figure out why I have to allow 3rd party cookies
to
get it to work, but it does.

PROBLEM
1) My cookie and script permissions have always been set to allow-all for
gmail.
2) I have two machines with identical installs (they're clones of each other
made a
week before this stopped working) and this only happened on one of them.
3) This problem began occurring *after* I encountered *another* problem:
3a) This problem was: Offline gmail *died* out of the blue.
3b) It wouldn't load. Just gave me a blank page. No html, js, etc. This was the
*loaded* url of it, not an about:blank page prior to navigation.
3c) I has on https, cookies and scripts were fine, and again, a cloned machine
with
identical settings was working perfectly fine on the exact same account and
configuration on offline gmail.
3d) This problem persisted in firefox safe mode.
3e) Google calenders exhibited the same "blank screen" behaviour.
4) This current problem occurred after an attempted reinstallation in trying to
solve
(3).
5) This current problem persisted through multiple attempts. This problem
persisted
in firefox safe mode.
SOLUTION
1) On firefox 3.5, I solved my problem by uninstalling gears and deleting the
gears
directory from the firefox profile.
2) The subsequent re installation proceeded as meant to, as if I started from
scratch.
3) I did not modify any other settings. Firefox was operating in normal mode
with all
add-ons and configurations identical to before this problem or the problem
mentioned
in (Problem:3), emerged.
4) The downside from all this is lost time, and also I had to re-download all my
mail, and instead of being able to retain 3 years, could only retain 2.
DISCUSSION
1) This leads me to believe the problem in both (Problem:4) and this thread
lies in a
corruption of the google gears database.
2) We can successfully eliminate browser and add-on configurations and settings
from
the problem due to the normal operation of identical conditions (Problem:3c,
Problem:2).
3) We can also rule out this issue being localized to gmail offline as it is
also
exhibited by calender (Problem:3e).
4) We can also rule out corruption in the google gears software kernel as the
re-installation in all cases was from a single installation package.
5) There is an inherent flaw in the transactions with the offline database that
may
cause people to experience both this problem and the other mentioned.
6) This is a problem with a chance of being severe in random occurrences. This
problem cannot be duplicated (see the fact that I had cloned setups).

The problem went away, just like that.
I still think it has to do with one of the addons or FF itself.
Here's what i've *now* got:
OS: Windows XP pro (all the latest patches)
APP: Firefox v3.5.3 {a minor 0.0.1 update}
ADDON: better Gmail 2 (v0.9.5) {a minor 0.0.2 update}
ADDON: Blank Canvas Gmail Signatures v1.11.12 {the same as before}

I had this problem in chrome but resolved it by deleting the gears database,
chrome and
gears then re-installing chrome and gears. I actually had to delete the files
under my
profile to make it work though.

@evaneaston: "Accept third-party cookies"... this worked for me. i uninstalled
gears,
cleared gears files from my firefox profile and re-installed gears again.
making sure
beforehand to accept third-party cookies.
windows 7 RC
firefox 3.5.3

@evaneaston, @tim.wieringa: Another alternative to allowing all third-party
cookies
is to add an "exception" to allow all cookies from google.com. I was having
trouble
after doing a fresh install of Firefox yesterday, because I knew I third party
cookies disabled and stumbled across this thread. Did a little experimenting,
and
remembered that I had previously enabled all cookies from google.com. After
adding
the exception, offline mail installed perfectly.

I met the same error in my Chromium (4.0.265.0/33933) on windows7, even with a re-
installed version cleaning the Gears cache.
It is noted that the offline gmail can be installed/run in my same windows7 system
with the Chrome release (4.0.249.89/38071).
May I clarify that if the issue still does not work in Chromium? Or there are some
steps/workarounds to make it work?

Thank you evaneaston! I added mail.google.com to my list of 3rd party allowed
sites
and it's working.
