I don't know about using Gears to send email, but I did have a problem where
Gmail
made Firefox crash repeatedly (100% repeatable when I tried to delete
everything from
my Spam folder). It was NOT related to Gears. It was related to Flash. I'll
tell you
the solution anyhow:
1) create a file called /etc/adobe/mms.cfg
2) insert the following lines into it:
WindowlessDisable=true
OverrideGPUValidation=true
If that doesn't work, other ideas here: http://macromedia.mplug.org/

I am using the XPI file provided here (

everything seems to be OK.

Unfortunately, dead or not, some sites and services still use Gears. It would
be nice
to get this resolved.
Does Gears install work for 64-bit Ubuntu?
Original comment by jeffrey....@gmail.com

FWIW, for 32-bit FF 3.0.X on Ubuntu 9.04, the link to "gears-linux-new.xpi" in
comment 21 does, indeed, work.
Just don't update it!

"gears-linux-new.xpi" does NOT work in Firefox 3.5.9 Ubuntu 9.10
Original comment by omegat...@gmail.com

The gears-linux-opt.xpi mentioned in comment 21 is already spoilt (64 bit). The
gears-linix-new.xpi from that post does not work in firefox 3.6. I've been
playing
around a bit, added the fix from comment 48, then decided to download firefox
3.5
using this:
http://www.dannybuntu.com/2009/06/day-1044b-howto-install-firefox-35rc3.html
(but not
by using wget, just using the browser). Then I installed it, checked the version
using Help -> about and... now I'm happily using Firefox 3.5 and
gears.google.com
tells me:
Gears is installed
Current version:
0.5.32.0;official;opt;linux;firefox
Probably I'll be having some safety leaks (anyone knowing some serious ones?)
and
probably I'm missing out some functions... but I'll live with that.

This is now just ridiculous.
I've been using off-line Gmail for about half a year now, and I simply love it.
I've
been wondering why I sporadically receive a message from Firefox stating that
"Google
Gears could not be installed", even though it works fine. This report explains
it:
FF has been trying to install an update that is of the wrong architecure (64-bit
instead of 32). Ironically, the download page explicitly states that 64-bit
Linux is
not supported, but 64-bit is the only version available.
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu Lucid, which contains FF 3.6 and the plugin
stopped
working because it was defined for FF 3.5 max. I tried pretty much every hint
suggested in this thread and then some with no avail. I finally downloaded the
source code from SVN and hey-presto, with a "make" and "make installers" I
finally
had a 32-bit Linux build that works without a hitch in FF 3.6 (great compile
scripts,
btw!). I had to add a few #includes to about half a dozen files to get it to
compile
but nothing else. The resulting package is attached - use at your own risk.
Later I noticed that Debian/Ubuntu has the add-on pre-packaged in the
"xul-ext-gears"
package, a simple install and that's it. I'm hoping that doesn't check the
Google
site for updates, I trust the Debian volunteers will maintain it better.
Gears is a fantastic tool for browsers while we're waiting for proper HTML5
support,
but as far as I can tell, for half a year no 32-bit Linux user has been able to
install Gears! I'm really astounded that Google hasn't been able to fix such a
trivial and critical issue in all this time. I hope they could find enough
resources
to maintain it functional until HTML5 is a reality.

Hi sampo,
I tried yours, but it didn't work for me, neither in 3.5 nor in 3.6 (eeebuntu 4

I didn't test gears.google.com, but in Gmail is synced correctly and functioned
offline. I've now uninstalled it and installed the "xul-ext-gears" Debian
package
instead. According to gears.google.com it's version
0.5.36.0;developer;opt;linux;firefox, so it's the newest available as well.

@ Comment 80:
Exit Firefox, go into the profile folder, delete extensions.cache,
extensions.ini, and extensions.rdf and restart Firefox. It should re-detect all
installed extensions and rebuild their paths.

I ditto comments 83 and 84. I'm having problems installing gears at all (I get
the typical output mentioned above saying it isn't compatible).
I'm running firefox 3.6.13 on 32 bit OpenSuse 11.2, and if it matters, KDE 4.4
(as well as WindowMaker).
Most of the fixes I've found seem to be for Debian-based systems. Anything for
us?

Same as above comment. sirald66 - there is a reason that this is undeveloped.
I can't believe I still had it starred either, and I'd imagine no google
engineers do - maybe a google historian does? Unstarred. (although I am also
still patiently waiting for gmail offline to be resurrected)
Original comment by data...@gmail.com

So is there a ticket for the HTML5 offline gmail feature, that all of us
"patiently waiting" could star instead?
Original comment by zzanz...@gmail.com
on 24 Jul 2011 at 11:30
Google Calendar Offline feature is pointing to Gears, hence the time wasted
trying to figure out its broken.
If HTML5 is their answer, then why does it offer Gears?
I run Firefox 3.6 which doesn't fully support HTML5; I run it because 4+
doesn't support a large number of my extensions.
