Still the same message while trying to install gears on Firefox 3.6.3pre aka
Namoroka
in Ubuntu 9.10 x86 i686.

"Google Gears" could not be installed because it is not compatible with your
Namoroka
build type (Linux_x86-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the
problem.

I tried editing install.rdf in xpi package as suggested in
http://code.google.com/p/gears/issues/detail?id=975

Install went as expected after the edit. Now i'm going to post this and restart
Firefox.

Does anyone care to fix this bug?

Here is a solusion that helped me:
Install package 'xul-ext-gears'. Then go to
/home/your_name/.mothilla/firefox/nonesense_name_folder and delete the
following files: extensions.cache, extensions.ini, extensions.rdf. Now restart
firefox and google gears should be there and detectable.

On Ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition, I got the dreaded error message and began to
follow dziamid's advice. However, all I needed to do was:
1) Install the xul-ext-gears package
2) Restart Firefox

I didn't need to delete any files. You can always delete them later!
