Digital Narrative Proposal For my soundscape, I want to focus on the ways in which the sounds around me as a college student have changed due to the transition that occurred in my daily life because of the coronavirus. I want to open my soundscape on the sounds of a college football game, cheering, talking, and potentially some upbeat background music such as a marching band playing. I want to build this sound (louder and louder) to highlight the excitement and also the amount of noise created by a large crowd. Following this, I plan to have some ominous music creep slowly (and build) into the background of these happier sounds. Eventually, I want this music to also build so that it is front and center above the other sounds. Once this occurs I plan to cut to silence. In a sense to symbolize how abrupt the shift in life was when the coronavirus first began to spread and many people felt like it came out of nowhere. Following this silence, I want to open on the sound of a coronavirus testing instruction video. (I already recorded this sound while being tested for coronavirus and I find it to be rather creepy.) Similar to how the football game sounds built up I want to build up sounds related to the coronavirus such as news reports, coughing, social distancing reminders, and even things like zoom noises that are more specific to the sounds heard by students. I then plan to once again cut to silence. Rather than symbolizing an abrupt change in this case I want the silence to represent a sort of acceptance in the sense that people move on even with the virus as a looming threat and still try to make the most out of life. I then will use some sounds I recorded of the bugs at night on campus with light piano music in the background. Again this is meant to represent a quieter less crowded reality at least in comparison to the football game but it is not meant to be negative. Instead, the ending is supposed to be hopeful and represents coming to terms with a bad situation.

Brian Sostek Soundscape Proposal Benjamin Miller (ENGCMP 0610) Link to repository: https://github.com/briansostek/soundscape2020fall For my soundscape project, I want to recreate the sounds of a boardwalk at the beach in New Jersey at dusk. Walking down the boardwalk with my good friends in the early evening is a great memory I have. The story I want to create (which never really happened) is that one of my friends gets lost and his phone is dead. We must ask around to find him, but another challenge that exists is that this is mid-COVID, meaning strangers probably do not want us talking to them. I will create a sense of time by adding sounds that exist during certain times of the day (etc. crickets once the sun goes down). Here's my proposed asset list:

For my soundscape I want to create the events of a person being released from prison in the wake of a pandemic. I am very passionate about Criminal Justice reform so it was a source of inspiration for me. I want to start out with the events of arrest, and then skip forward to 2020 where COVID-19 has changed the world. Being released from prison is a hard enough transition, but I'm sure it's even more difficult under recent circumstances. It will continue on to show how the individual reacts to the COVID world and how they are able to start a "new life." I want to showcase all different sounds and emotions that go along with this process. It will tell the story of one individual and how they interact with the world around them. I would like the mood to be noticeably different from beginning to end representing a transition. News coverage will be used to create the sense of passing time. Voices will be used frequently and will be critical to the story. I will use natural noises and also music. I hope that this will be a fun creative project but it could also be eye-opening to listeners.

I want to create a semi-autobiographical narrative inspired by "Day In: Day Out," my own life, and a scene from Bojack Horseman. I want to go through the morning routine of someone who is trying to start consistently running, and having moderate success. I want to go through the subject waking up, the sort-of disorganized thoughts that occur when you wake up, and the intention to run, then the mundane and grey and boring actions that need to be taken just to get out and running, the running itself, maybe some of the impact of it on health/mental health, and then skip to the next day. I am going to have a narrator voice that's essentially the subject's conscience, and I'm just realizing I need to distinguish that somehow and make it obvious that's what it is. The running will go well for a while, but then there will be a day when the subject is tired, and starts arguing with the conscience, who gets pretty stern about it. I'm not precisely sure whether it will branch off in a successful direction here or a failure and more arguing, but eventually I want the person to clearly be running more often than not. Book-ending the narrative, at the start and end, will be the subject describing what's going on to someone else. I want that part at the end to create a stark juxtaposition between a mundane, common sentence like "I've been running a bit recently" and the inner struggle that goes along with that.

For my soundscape, I plan on following my cat Figaro around our apartment and recording all of the craziness he and our other cat Morty encounter on an everyday basis. While there are only 3 of us in the house, our house can get pretty chaotic. There are 4 floors, and each floor is basically it's own room. Each floor is distinct and has different sounds associated with it; for example, I live in the basement which is also where the laundry room is located. So I plan on having the sound of the washing machine running in the background, along with my fan. I also like to practice music in my room, so I plan on having some sort of segment where you can hear guitar being practiced. If you wander up a floor, you'll find the kitchen and our living room. Sounds heard here are the noises of cooking, the refrigerator, me and my roommate playing video games, and just general chaos. I chose this idea for my proposal because I think it would be cool to be able to get a feeling for how my roommates and I live while not being the sole subjects of the narrative. Our house also has pretty thin walls, so trying to layer and place sounds in specific ways to try and get an accurate representation of our soundscape will be fun to analyze and play around with. A list of planned assets can be found here. The list is a work in progress, but I think it has a good basis for what I plan on doing so far!

For my soundscape project, I want to do a "day in the life" in the virtual environment. I would kind of walk through how my day as a college student works now being constantly on the computer, in Zoom calls, going for walks, and just hanging out in the room. I also want to try and bring out the emotional aspect of how isolating it can be in these times when you can only talk to a limited number of people and most of your human interaction is currently happening virtually. I plan on including sounds such as an alarm, running water, drawers opening/closing to signal my morning routine, then I would add a few outdoor sounds to signify when I go on my daily walk in the morning (stillness of the morning, leaves crunching, a few people). I would also record want to record the sounds of cars and the "Walk Sign is on to Cross Forbes Avenue" voice as I constantly hear those throughout the day and at night based on my dorm room location. Then, I would want to get my new "classroom sounds" such as people talking, typing noises, and the "This meeting is being recorded noise". I think that specific noise would help signify how many classes I am going to each day. Towards the end of the day, I would probably try to use my own voice or the voice of my roommate saying "I'm bored, there's nothing to do" or something like that to kind of begin to draw out the emotional side of quarantine and how people can feel super isolated. Then, I may try and get sounds from a Netflix show as that is usually part of my end-of-day routine along with similar sounds to my morning routine.

Proposal: My project is going to focus on the anthropomorphic qualities of an inanimate object in a pawn shop: a toy shark. In this story, the narrator is the shark. It will focus on the toy's thoughts throughout the span of being in the shop for a day (even though he is a long-term resident there). Throughout the day, different customers come in and browse the shop, not paying any mind to our shark protagonist. Despite all of the toys around him being constantly purchased, he keeps an upbeat attitude about being purchased. Since the shark cannot speak aloud, he is forced to deal with his thoughts internally. My planned project doesn't really deal with toys in the way that Toy Story does. In fact, since the toys cannot speak, the shark feels that he is in his own isolation, the only form of interaction he gets is when a customer inspects him, which is why the stakes of getting purchased are huge.

My idea for this soundscape project was to tell a story about a laboratory subject breaking out of containment. The story I thought up has a tentative script. It follows the perspective of a scientist going into a top-secret and heavily secure laboratory setting completely alone in the dead of night. After he enters the lab, he goes about his standard business, performing tests on the subject and monitoring the subject altogether. After a while, one of the tests goes awry, causing in minor damage to the lab setting. This breaks the test subject out of its stasis, and it breaks free of the containment chamber it has remained in. After it breaks out, it begins to approach the scientist that the listener has been following. I either plan to end the story at a cliffhanger there, or potentially persue the idea of the subject somehow interacting with the scientist. This could vary from a mundane interaction to the subject infecting the scientist or even killing the scientist.

For my project, I wanted to do something with a kind of a creepy, horror story element to it. The main focus of the narrative would be a family moving into a haunted home and the soundscape would be from their young child’s perspective. The sounds, in the beginning, would include the closing of a vehicle door, opening of a trunk, moving of boxes, walking on gravel, possibly some speaking, and the jingling of keys. The house is very large, old, and creepy so to establish that fact I want the sound of the door opening after being unlocked to be very creaky. I would also need the sound of creaky steps on a hardwood floor for when they begin to walk around and explore the space. The next scene would be the child exploring their surroundings. The sounds I would include for that is the running up and down of stairs and opening and closing of different doors, possibly a voice calling for the child to stop running around the house. They eventually reach their room and try to make themselves comfortable ( noises: jumping on a bed, sighing, turning over in bed, fade out into silence to indicate sleep/nap). I then would have the jolting call of someone yelling dinner’s ready. Following that, the sounds for this scene would include getting out of bed, walking down the stairs, moving chairs against the floor, clinking of plates, cups, and utensils. Additionally, it will begin raining so sounds of rain hitting a window will overlay it. The post-dinner dialogue would include a mother stating that it's time for the child to wash up and go to bed. Sounds for this scene would include turning a faucet on, running a bath, and splashing. The child is then dried off, taken to bed, and given a kiss goodnight. There would be an indication that the rain had gotten worse and the next sounds would include the crackling of lightning and thunder. Feelings of fear are supposed to intensify as the child hears something knocking on their window and the creaking of the floorboards. Eventually, the child gets up to see what’s going. Sounds for this scene would include hearing a TV downstairs and then walking down the stairs to see their parents have fallen asleep watching it (noises: snoring). The child then heads back up the stairs (noises: the creaking of floorboards). They then hear a voice to their left and begin running in the other direction. The voices start changing (possibly becoming distorted, faster, and louder, I haven’t decided yet). The child then runs to hide in a closet in their room (noises: open & closing of the closet door). They then hear loud footsteps that stop in front of the closet door. Following that, there is the sound of a child screaming and the soundscape ends.

For my soundscape narrative, I would like to explore the role of food and cooking in different cultures across the world. Drawing inspiration from Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown, I'd like to touch on the different ways people of varying cultures interact with food and how these interactions play into the broader picture of their culture. I'm thinking of doing this by splitting the narrative into two or three segments, each featuring a different country or culture, and the sounds of a scene from each. While I haven't completely planned out each scene, I am thinking of doing one of a person grabbing food or coffee on the go in one place or country, and then a person or family cooking dinner at home in another. The main interactions between any people or characters would be in the forefront of the soundscape, with sounds native to the respective area running in the background as well as sounds centering around food and cooking.
Proposed Asset List -street/city sounds -background chatter -dialogue between people -wrapping of foil or paper -liquid being poured -knife chopping something on cutting board -flame being lit on stove -sizzle of food in pan -timers going off

For my soundscape narrative I want to capture the repetitive nature of a student during quarantine. To do this I will be gathering sounds that I encounter throughout my day, mostly one's that allude to online classes or a lack of people. The these days will repeat with each day becoming faster in speed and more distorted with nuanced sounds, and an ever growing background music (inspired by fallout 4 music). Once the fallout music gets quite loud it will overlap with panicked news broadcasts about Covid-19 and colleges closing. Then all the sound cuts to an alarm clock once more (how each day in the repetition has started) and transitions to the sound of waves, but very obviously the sound is coming from an old recording. Then the waves will stop, I'll play a sigh, then the zoom join meeting sound and a fading out track of melancholy music.
I feel like this repetition with nuance and the contrasted tones of a normal day to calaclysmic soundtracks with forboding news stories, and a sudden snap back to reality, will convey how quarantine has felt to me: That time is irrelavent, and the endless repetition of online classes without much variety to the days alludes to one starting to feel as if the days aren't real. Longing for days past (i.e. the beach).
Kyle O'Malley Soundscape Narrative Proposal
My narrative will follow the experience of someone going on a typical trip to target. Complete with buying a million things not on their list and getting kicked out because its closing time. Target is a very common place for me to be and I think it would be an interesting challenge to try and recreate the sequence of events that happens when I go there using only sound. I want to capture the usual ambiance of Target with the checkout beeps, frequent announcements, and maybe a screaming child or two. All of that will be layered behind the audio of me (and some of my inner thoughts) along with my roommate who goes with me to target. The general story will roughly go like this: I go to target with a list of things to get, I get distracted and keep putting things in my cart I don’t need and aren’t on my list, announcement that target is closing for the night comes on, I leave with lots of stuff but nothing from my list.
My soundscape narrative will follow a main character who will be walking alone in a snowy forest. Eventually, the soundscape will evolve into a chase scene. The listener will not be able to immediately identify the danger. It will be fast and the main character will have to move quickly to survive. They will realize that fleeing this danger has caused more trouble than they could have imagined. I am still contemplating what new trouble the main character will get themselves into. I like the idea of them entering a cave and slowly realizing that it is home to a predator. I may also experiment with the idea of a frozen lake that slowly cracks as the main character steps. Additionally, I want to include a jump in time through a flashback, or possibly a concussion/loss of consciousness. At the end of the recording, the identities of the danger and the main character will be revealed.
I plan to slowly reveal more context as the soundscape progresses. I believe this setting will be interesting and fun as snow covered forests are practically silent.

Proposal: My soundscape narrative will follow someone on their voyage to a travel destination. More specifically, the environment that I will be focusing on is the airport while they wait to board their flight. Beginning with the arrival at the airport, the person will be followed in the narrative until the airplane takes off. A lot happens in airports so I think I could get really creative with this idea. The person will have to check in their bags and acquire their ticket, go through security, potentially get food, use the bathroom, and wait for their flight. I plan on incorporating a lot of different sounds into this project. Beyond all the human interaction that my main character will have, I also plan on adding music and sound effects such as foot steps, cups at the bar, voices overlapping, sink water in the bathroom, and more. I personally will record the conversations that the person has with all the different workers he/she comes in contact with. Ideally, I would like to use different scripted voices for these scenes as well. I may also be able to record noise that mimics what is heard in a restaurant and different footsteps coming from all different angles. Overall, I look forward to seeing this project come to life and I think it will be really enjoyable.

https://github.com/shreyababu/soundscape2020fall.git I want to create a narrative imagining if the coronavirus lasted for multiple years past 2020. This idea is based on a post I saw on Instagram that said that people are expecting that things will suddenly get better once the clock strikes 12 on December 31st. This year has been rough for everybody and I am definitely guilty of hoping that all the terrible parts of 2020 will somehow just stay in 2020. I want to open with sounds of a new year’s party (2020), with sounds of people talking and laughing, drinks clinking, music, sounds of one of the new year’s specials, counting down from 5, and then a loud cheer of “Happy New Year!”. Then, the narrative will cut to audio clips of breaking news from some of the crazy stuff that has happened this year, such as the California wildfires, death of Kobe Bryant, Iran drone/missile stuff, announcement that we are in a global pandemic, murder hornets, Trump impeachment trial, Beirut explosion, George Floyd’s death, etc. These sounds will come as a fast compilation of different news reporters speaking, in a way that is meant to be kind of overwhelming and blurry. Then, it will be New Year’s again- but this time the sounds will be a lot less cheery and excited; it will be quieter and sounds of only a few people wishing each other Happy New Year. I want to then add in sounds of new life in the pandemic (airport reminders to please sit six feet apart, friends reminding each other not to forget their masks, etc.). Once the “year” goes by, there will once again be audio of the next New Year’s to indicate a constant cycle, and then cut to silence.
Assets:
-New Year’s sounds for 2020 (people talking and laughing, drinks clinking, music, sounds of one of the new year’s specials, counting down from 5, and then a loud cheer of “Happy New Year!”)
-New Year’s sounds for following years (quieter voices, sighs, shuffling around, dreary music, etc)
-sounds of life during a pandemic, ex: airport reminders to please sit six feet apart, friends reminding each other not to forget their masks, etc.
-news clips: California wildfires, death of Kobe Bryant, Iran drone/missile stuff, announcement that we are in a global pandemic, murder hornets, Trump impeachment trial, Beirut explosion, George Floyd’s death, etc.

For my soundscape, I am creating a war story from the Vietnam war. This idea is based on the many many brutal stories I've heard from my pappy. I plan on starting it with noises of bombing, screaming, and gunshots to create the dramatic effect of war; then the scream of a soldier for a medic after getting injured all to create this story of pain and death which is so tied in with the feeling of war. I am also thinking about adding in some dialogue between the injured man and a fellow soldier as well as other sounds like grass and trees shaking to set the environment of the forests in Vietnam. The main points of the soundscape will be the dialogue between soldiers as well as the sounds of gunshots and explosions. To end I'll have the fellow soldier crying or screaming since the injured one died.
Asset List: -Gunshots -Explosions -Fire -Trees -Grass rustling -Screaming soldiers(Vietnamese and English) -Dialogue between the two soldiers -Helicopter
For my soundscape narrative, I am going to explore a night in the life of a pizza delivery driver. It has been said that a pizza delivery driver is potentially one of the most dangerous jobs one could have... and this narrative will show that. It's almost the end of her shift, and she just wants to go home, when she gets called in for two final deliveries of the night. The story begins with the diegetic sounds of an average pizza shop, various chatter of the people dining in, people ordering take out, the cooking of the pizzas, and the calming music playing in the dining area. As the delivery driver leaves for her final deliveries of her shift, there are sounds of her footsteps walking to her car, her car keys jingling, the rev of her car engine, music playing from her car radio, and ambient noises of cars driving past her. The first delivery goes smoothly, she gets the pizza to the rightful customer, and it's off to her last delivery of the night, and she's done with her shift. However, this is where things go wrong. As she approaches the door for her last delivery, an unsuspecting person answers the door, a seemingly innocent older woman, but things aren't as they seem.
I want to make the last part of this narrative sort of thriller-ish and tense; I think when it comes to genres like horror and suspense thrillers, sound is the most important components to creating the right atmosphere, and I'd love to try and convey those suspenseful feelings using only sound.

For my soundscape narrative, I'm planning on using the idea of going on a run through South Oakland and the Shenley Park area. I thought it would be interesting to do this and use recognizable sounds that would make people who live here able to recognize where they are in the soundscape. Some of these sounds would include footfalls (obviously), doors opening and closing at the beginning and end, perhaps some low-volume copyright-free music in order to simulate listening to music on a run, birds chirping near the park, and sounds from the road. Some of the more Pittsburgh-specific sounds that I think would make the soundscape more authentic might be walking into Phipps Conservatory, the sounds of one of the crosswalks on forbes ave or 5th ave, and going into Frenchi's deli (with permission) to get water. As I get further into the process of making it, I may have more ideas in regard to sounds of the area. I may use dialogue in some parts if it would be beneficial to make the soundscape more immersive.

Write a brief proposal for your soundscape narrative project. What place or environment will you try to represent? What story will you try to tell – or, at least, what is the premise (starting point) of that story?
See the full range of thought-questions in the assignment prompt for brainstorming strategies, and the Parachute Prompts at the bottom of the README if you're stuck.
NB: I am asking you to include a prospective assets list, i.e. a table of the sounds you think you'll need and where you might be able to source them. You can choose to include that assets list here or place it as a file (e.g. assets.md) in your repository, to more easily track changes.
Either way, please include a link here to your soundscape repository, making it easier to find when we get to group work.
