Soundscape Proposal (HW after Th 1/28) #3

Open benmiller314 opened 3 years ago

benmiller314 commented 3 years ago

Write a brief proposal for your soundscape narrative project. What place or environment will you try to represent? What story will you try to tell – or, at least, what is the premise (starting point) of that story?

See the full range of thought-questions in the assignment prompt for brainstorming strategies, and the Parachute Prompts at the bottom of that page if you're stuck.

NB: I am asking you to include a prospective assets list, i.e. a table of the sounds you think you'll need and where you might be able to source them. You can choose to include that assets list here or to place it as a file (e.g. assets.md) in your repository, which would help you more easily update and track changes as you fill in the real sources.

Either way, please include a link here to your soundscape repository, making it easier to find when we get to group work.

For my soundscape, I want to mess with the concept of the "train of thought” transporting ideas around a brain. To establish what's happening plot-wise, I'd use either a conversation between the train's conductor and the passenger (a "passing thought"), or a train announcer delivering updates throughout the trip. As the climatic event, I’m thinking of having the train’s schedule get delayed due to a “brainstorm,” adding in some thunderstorm sounds. I may open and close the soundscape with the sounds of someone typing or writing before it fades into train noises, to try to convey that the narrative is taking place internally.

My idea for my soundscape is to capture the "Mundaness of loneliness". This is something that will really put into perspective how life is for me now that I had to retire from the sport that I did for 18 years. Especially since I am no longer home at the moment with my family of five ( that includes my dog without me). I am in a state of "quietness" all the time. I cannot say that it is completely quiet because there is always something making a noise, but the ability to be still with almost the entirety of silence is something that I have come accustomed too. I will add everything that I do prior to having a little time with friends at the end of the day. Since I do not do well on my own I still make an effort when they are free to see the people that I care about. I also am attempting to make the background music for this as chill as possible, and then have a switch to a more upbeat happy feel when I go see my friends because that is how I feel more often than not when I go to see them.

My idea for the soundscape project really came from my experience these past 2 weeks being quarantined in my room due to contact tracing. My idea of "Quarantine Classes" will ideally create a feeling for the listener of the challenge to remain engaged during online classes. I will be attempting to create the environment of my room and the feeling of being confined to one room. Especially since I have not been able to leave my house, let alone my room, it is difficult to focus and be motivated when the rest of my daily life has been so mundane. The overall soundscape will start with the beginning of an online lecture recording and that will be the constant background noise for the entire clip. Then the narration will be my inner thoughts while listening to class. When the thoughts arise, the lecture will fade to show the experience of drifting off into another thought/daydream. Along with the narration, I plan to also enter other outside noises that I hear in my room through out the day. I plan to use the recording to show a passage of time and end the soundscape with the end of a lecture and maybe something humorous like saying something out loud and not being muted.

For my soundscape, I have been thinking about doing a sort of pirate themed scene and all the sounds associated to being on the open water. I have two different paths for this project that I may take, either a ship on the open sea and encountering an enemy ship and having to fight them with cannonballs and the like. Or I may just go with a calm day on the open sea with chatter from the crew and singing sea shanties as they try to find their way to hidden treasure. Right now I am leaning more toward the latter since I believe it will be easier to record voices talking to each other on the sea than choreographing an entire fight scene with cannonball sounds and the like.

The sounds that I have thought up to set the mood of this scenario are as follows (but are not limited to):

  1. the sound of waves and open water
  2. Seagulls chirping up above
  3. ship creaking, or wood creaking
  4. sails being hit by the wind
  5. the wind
  6. normal pirate phrases such as "rrrr"
  7. pirate themed sea songs or shanties
  8. a conversation between the captain of the ship and a crewmate
  9. cannonballs(possibly)
  10. an anchor dropping off the side of the ship when they hit land
  11. maybe even a storm of some sort that they encounter
  12. I will also include a person in the lookout shouting down directions and eventually saying "landho!"

I would like my soundscape to be for one of my favorite places (which I miss so much) the movie theater. Movies play a very important role in my life and when I was thinking of places I rather be this was on the top of my list. The story I would want to tell is simply walking through a movie theater.

I would convey what’s happening with the sounds around the subject. When they first walk in, they’ll order a ticket and listen in to conversations as people leave or as they excitedly wait for their turn. Then the subject will walk past all the food and the sounds of popcorn, soda machines, and potentially advertisements will play. As the subject moves to the theater, you’ll hear the usher give directions and the muffled sounds of different movies playing in the background. Once the subject arrives to their movie, the audience will hear the introduction for movies (including turning off cellphones, that snacks are available in the lobby, etc). My hope is this story will feel like a person enjoying their day at the movies and remind people of this feeling (that we haven’t truly experienced since March 2020).

I would source most of my sounds from the Internet on websites such as Videvo and other websites (as I find them). However, I will record the conversations myself and with the help of my friends. The sounds I currently plan on using include the following:

Source online- Popcorn popping, soda machine, different advertisements for foods, etc Different movies (horror, romantic comedy, comedy, science fiction, etc) The sounds before a movie (silence your cell phones) Quiet chatter Muffled footsteps Children yelling/crying

Record myself- Cell phone ringing Conversations “Shh” noises

For my soundscape project, I want to take listeners through an evening in my life as a dance teacher (COVID-19 style), by representing my dance studio through sounds. I teach several evenings and days throughout the week and it is safe to say that no day is the same, simply with the varying groups I teach. However, I plan to choose one evening to focus on in hopes of capturing specific, unique sounds. There are also events and their sounds at the dance studio that occur as a result of COVID-19, which I will include as well. I also plan to include pieces from my commute to and from work, and also the work (choreography) that I partake in upon returning from the dance studio. I feel there are several aspects of dance teaching many people may not know of, and I hope to convey some of this through my audio. I want my listeners to be able to mentally picture the actions, in hopes of them being able to take away the fact that I LOVE what I do and gain insight into my life as a dance teacher.

For my soundscape, I want to present the idea of going everywhere by doing nothing. Awhile ago my roommates and I decided to go on a walk around Pitt's campus, with no particular destination in mind. What started out simply as a walk ended up being really a formative experience in my life. It was the first time I ever really took time to appreciate the world around me for its beauty and complexity. We ended up walking for 4 hours all around Pitt and CMU, and really went everywhere by setting out to do nothing. I want to recreate this trip because I think it was the epitome of the saying "take time to smell the roses" and I hope that I can craft a space in which the listener can join me on this journey that I took.

In order to convey the scene I will use a mix of my own narration of the journey as well as sounds from the enviornment that will capture specific moments from the walk. It will be tough to condense the 4 hour walk into a short soundscape, but I think it is definitely possible. I talked about this walk in a podcast that I made with my dad awhile back and will use that as my guide when choosing which scenes from the walk to include.

Asset List

  1. Trombone music
  2. Background chatter
  3. Footsteps (in different types of shoes)
  4. Cars driving on different surfaces
  5. Sound of a creek

  2. Sounds from inside my house

These lists will expand as I choose what scenes from the walk I want to include in the project. For the repurposed assets, I will get those from websites that offer royalty free sound effects. For the created assets I will record them at home with the microphone I use to podcast.

The idea for my soundscape is to try to emulate the feeling of camping in the woods near a river. Not only does it represent my fondness of hiking and adventuring outdoors, but it holds particular significance to me especially because it's one of my last memories of pre-pandemic social life. In fact, I found out the news of Pitt's COVID-19 evacuation plans during spring break last year in the Pocono Mountains. I'm not necessarily sure of the entire narrative of my soundscape yet, but I plan to try to recreate one of the moments from that trip: hanging out with a couple of my friends around a campfire while we play music and enjoy each other's company. To conclude the project, I'm considering having the listener retire to bed in their tent and sleeping bag, which would be symbolized sonically by fading the audio track. I'm especially excited to experiment with the different sound effects by adding reverb and adjusting the volume of the animal/insect sounds and playing around with the high pass filter for the radio.

When thinking about soundscapes that might be interesting, I really liked the idea of an outdoor soundscape. I think the idea of constant, atmospheric noise from nature can make a really immersive sonic environment. I also personally love hiking, camping, and going on outdoor adventures. However, since I was a kid, I have always been slightly afraid of the possibility of a bear attack during one of these outings. I want to create a soundscape that revels in the joy and wonder of being out in nature and the bonding opportunity that it can present for a pair of friends, but also the danger and fear that comes along with this. High cliffs, isolation, and unexpected visits from wild animals always have to be at the front of your mind when venturing outdoors. I especially intend to focus on the latter one of those dangers. I hope that this project allows for me to share an aspect of my life that I love and enjoy as I simultaneously project one of my greatest and most constant fears onto it.

The basic idea for my soundscape is to set it at The Edge of the World. The audio would begin with the sound of the first character, a traveler, walking over some material (candidate footstep noises include dirt, gravel, sand, or ash). The sound of wind slowly becomes louder. A door can be heard creaking, after which an old woman's voice can be heard. The two have a conversation about what this place is, how the traveler got here, what the old woman does out here, what lies beyond (a vast sea of emptiness- the sounds of waves crashing can be faintly heard). The old woman invites the traveler inside for soup.

I would like for my soundscape to be set in the North Pole following Santa's morning. It would start with him waking up, eating cookies and milk for breakfast, and walking through snow to his workshop where we'll hear loud noises of lots of elves singing, talking, and working. I like the idea of the contrast between the quietness of his morning just like anyone else's vs. the loudness of the elves in the workshop and the two coming together as he walks over to the workshop. I'll have to make it clear who these characters are, so I am thinking with Santa there could be an interaction with Mrs. Claus as he's eating breakfast of her telling him to stop eating cookies for breakfast because he has lots of time until Christmas. I am also thinking of adding in details of Santa putting in AirPods as he's walking and listening to music. I may change this later on to have more of a specific storyline, but for now I think this is a good starting point to experiment with different sounds/editing and set a scene.

My idea for the soundscape project is “Come Over For Dinner”: the semi-hectic behind-the-scenes of preparing to host a casual dinner with friends. Personally, I find food prep work to be extremely relaxing and calming because I can keep myself occupied and concentrate on a string of relatively simple tasks. It takes my mind off things, and it leaves me with one of my favorite things: FOOD! Along with that fact that one of the things I’ve missed the most due to covid-19 restrictions is having people over for a casual get-together dinner, I thought creating a soundscape of everything that happens beforehand would be fun. My hope is that my soundscape can simulate the sounds of the makings of a great night with friends.

My plan is to start with a phone call inviting my friends over for dinner, including a bit of small talk and some mention of the food I’m going to make. Then I’ll have the sounds of going out to and from the grocery store. Next will be all the diverse sounds of cooking and setting a table. And finally, at the very end, the guests will arrive.

The pacing of the sequential events will be much quicker since I will be creating a soundscape representative of about 3 hours of real-time preparation but I am being very mindful to order the sounds in a way that is intuitive and I’m hoping that all the sounds will be distinct and recognizable enough for the listener to be able to understand the sequence of steps taking place.

Created assets: Dialogue between myself and guests over phone and in-person Sounds of doors opening/closing Walking sounds/foot traffic/footsteps Shopping cart wheels squeaking Unpacking groceries/plastic bags rustling Washing hands Random humming Chopping/cutting vegetables Food sizzling, boiling, mixing, tossing Running sink water Clatter of bottles, dishes, and silverware

Solution: all things will be recorded myself using food and equipment in my apartment kitchen; I will speak as the host and my roommates will speak the guests’ dialogue (in-person and over the phone); if the quality of recorded audio for anything (like footsteps) is lacking, I will look to fair use resources for assets.

My idea for a soundscape is 'An Unfortunate Hike'. It's an experience that I have had to go through more times than I would think. The sun is shining, the weather is lovely, you decide to go on a nice walk in the park and then you're twenty minutes into the woods and it suddenly starts to pour. In this case I plan to condense the experience down into the rather shorter piece of audio due to the time limits of the assignment. I will start with the sounds of walking through the park, with a mix of noises such as breeze in the trees, footsteps on a trail, bird song, a gurgling stream, and potentially other audio. Then it will transition into stronger wind and an increasingly strong sound of rain. The footsteps will get faster and louder and then I will end the scene with a slamming car door, hard breathing, and the sound of rain on the roof of a car.

I want to create a soundscape that represents a night in my life. This will include me finishing up some homework, making dinner and watching TV, etc. This is an experience that I've grown to love while spending more time at home. The comforting feeling of closing out of zoom and closing my laptop to start the beginning of the end of my day. All of my roommates eat dinner at the same time as we end classes at similar times so I'll hear them in the kitchen before I get a chance to leave my room. The sound of the sink running as they prepare to cook dinner, and the tired chatter that ensues as we discuss our days. Some of us then head to our living room and watch a few episodes of a show. Normally after dispersing with my roommates, I have a chance to facetime home and do my nighttime bed routine which includes skincare, brushing my teeth, and showering among other things.

My soundscape will tell a story of Gen Z trying to enter the job market during the pandemic. I want to focus on one subject, maybe two, trying to get a job, and knowing how few people I connect with, they will probably be college seniors like me. I would do some interviews to capture what that frustration and insecurity is like and why the socioeconomic moment we’re in right now compounds on preexisting stress and difficulty. Some general shadowing would go along with this as well, to hopefully capture brief allowances of someone obviously frustrated. I think the office noises will generate this clear disconnect between what someone wants and what it's like to not have it. But I'm also brainstorming on ways to showcase how miserable it is to be so desperate for a chance to sit at an office computer all day.

I’m thinking this will be set at someone’s school/work-from-home base, where they have their laptop set up and what not. I could ask them to stage an interview maybe, and have them answer the phone how they would if that were happening, followed by their iPhone ringtone and maybe some shuffling to get to a quieter place. Or they could practice how they would answer common interview questions, like "tell me about yourself" or "what was a time you failed," as well as the typical niceties we're all tired of but still feel forced to do: "thank you so much for you time" and what not.

I am interested in having a day at the beach for my soundscape project! Since this is the spring semester, I am sure I am not the only one that is ready to go to the beach. There are plenty of other activities to do right now during the winter such as snowboarding, ice-skating, visiting winter villages (or not due to COVID), and more. However, I think that everyone is thinking about the beach right now during these freezing, snowy nights. My goal for this project is to simulate the sounds you might hear while on vacation. This may start with unpacking everything from the car and walking across the boardwalk while you are weighed down by all of your supplies. Eventually walking across the hot sands may feel so familiar that listeners may feel their heals starting to burn up! At some point along the narrative, I will be visiting a Hawaiian themed tiki bar and ordering a pina colada. I can imagine a faint toybox radio playing music at this bar that I may be able to procure in audacity. Throughout most of the track there will be consistent waves crashing and seagulls chirping. I will also be able to create isolated scenes by reducing the sounds of waves crashing at certain points.

The following lists include some of the assets I am choosing to include in my project. They also can be found in the ASSETS.md file in my repository.

Solution for all repurposed assets will be fair use online resources All created audio will be done via self and friends My idea for the soundscape project is “The Sounds of Love”. The plan is to create mini events in the plot line that depict different scenes where love is shown. First, the sounds of romantic love: Created*:

Then, the sounds of motherly love: Created*:

This will repeat for scenes of friendship/platonic love, the love a child has for their grandparents, the love a person has for their mother (will be based around a voicemail they leave to their mother saying college has been hard, and she misses her). The final scene will be that of a eulogy given at a funeral. It will be brief, with sounds of crying and soft music, and only a few words from the speaker, but will indicate the nature of the scene by the tell-tall language of a eulogy.

For my soundscape project, I'd like to encapsulate Oakland at night. I live in North Oakland and I'm quite a night owl! Almost all of my classes are afternoon and night classes so my sleep schedule is like 4 am to 11 am some nights. I like to go on walks around Oakland sometimes when it's this late at night because it's pretty interesting. Oftentimes it's calm and serene, but sometimes there are interesting things to see and hear.

I would do audio recordings briefly describing where I'm at and overlay them with chill background music and sound effects, and try to incorporate any cool background noise as well as any interesting sounds (such as a train, etc). I'd probably walk to different areas of Oakland on different nights and just make observations for this project. If there wasn't anything interesting, I might tell stories about interesting things I've seen walking around Oakland in the past.

I am interested in making a soundscape that tells the narrative of leaving school on a Friday afternoon after classes finish up, and going on the long drive home to surprise family. Last February (not long before spring break and COVID changed school life, and all of life for that matter), I was able to pack up for the weekend and drive home to surprise my parents. I live just outside of Philadelphia, so the drive is about 5 hours long. I have taken this drive many many times throughout my college career, many times with other people in the car and many times by myself. Though I love the company on those long drives, it is a much different feeling when you are by yourself with so much open road in front of you. This is exactly what I would like to capture in my soundscape, with the added bonus of a lighthearted surprise at the end amidst a time when so many of us are unable to see our families.

Before the generative writing we did on Thursday, I had no idea what I wanted to do or what story my soundscape would tell. As ideas started to appear in my mind, I thought of doing my narrative based on sounds I find comfort in. Thinking about it more and more, I found that my sounds did not tell a cohesive story, so I went to my favorite sound for inspiration: thunderstorms. And when are the best thunderstorms? Well of course in summer, so from there on the ball kept rolling until it formed my proposal.

I will convey what’s happening during the storm through sounds best associated with summer and the lead up to a storm. When the audio is first introduced, the slight whistling of the wind will accompany crickets and other bugs chirping and humming. As thunder rolls in from the distance, the wind picks up and we experience the first tonal shift. The wind then picks up, the storm crashes in, and we experience this chaos. The storm will be a violent, but short, burst that will end as it began, with the peaceful sounds of a cool summer's night. I want the audience listening to be able to close their eyes and picture theirselves at a window, watching this turbulent event unravel. I want them to be transported to that actual event, but an interpretation of their choosing.

I will source most of the sounds in my narrative from the Internet (since I am focusing ion the sounds of summer and we are currently in the middle of a Pittsburgh winter) on websites that offer accessible audio clips as I come to them. The sounds I plan on using (in addition to anymore I find work well) include:
