In Debian/unstable the autogen.sh script fails with error:
libtoolize: error: AC_CONFIG_MACRO_DIRS([m4]) conflicts with ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS=-I build/autotools.
I have moved all *.m4 scripts into the m4 folder, instead of having m4 and build/autotools. Now compilation appears to work.
I hope this is the correct solution.
