Speaking as a graphic designer, I'd have to say the Go logotype is pretty bad
too, and maybe not what you
guys might want to strive for. I think the notion of using a Velociraptor is
cool and makes sense. Not sure
what the Greek means in this context other than forcing you to write out
"[anic]" in Roman letters below.

I know having mascots is a time-honoured tradition in software development
(Linux's Tux, BSD's Daemon,
Darwin's Platypus etc.), and that you probably want some graphic device(s) to
use in presentations and on a
future website or whatever, but it's worth considering the same questions that
businesses and other non-
profits do when they work on a visual identity: Does the Name, logotype
(typography) and emblem (or in your
case mascot) help express and support what we're doing? Do people get it? Just
how much will you have to
explain? If you do have to explain, it might be a good thing in order to get
conversation opportunity and buy-
in.

At first blush, I'd say if Anic (or anic?) is about SPEED, the Velociraptor
notion is excellent. The illustration is a
good illustration, but probably not too useful in a mascot or logo imprint
sense and you may want something
more "cartoony" or more figurative like a silhouette. The typography could
match the notion of speed a lot
more than it does.

I am attaching a file that simply shows a velociraptor silhouette and some
different typography treatments so
you can see the difference these kinds of changes make. The are examples only,
and shouldn't be taken as
options for any further design.

Happy to help your project in this regard on a pro bono basis if it's useful
and suits you (dependant of course
on time and other obligations I have).

Last item in the FAQ says velociraptor. Apparently recently discovered to have
feathers. pretty fascinating
actually. http://code.google.com/p/anic/wiki/FAQ. The wikipedia articles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velociraptor - you can see the source file I used
to make my silhouette.
