I agree with you. Have you considered slack? I use it for a few other projects.
It also has a GitHub app.
I've used Discord and Gutter as well. But would prefer Slack. What do you think?

What about GitHub for the time being. I'd really like to get more people to collaborate.

I use Github smartphone app daily. In my opinion, Slack or some other communication channel is more appropriate than Github issue with hundreds of comments.
