Python: Select Interpreter in the VSCode menu is provided by the official VSCode Python extension. This should be mentioned as a requirement/pre-requisite

related idea: can we show the selected interpreter in this extension's sidebar under e.g. the library manager?

will be mentioned in the readme for the next release

Not sure we need this. It is visible in the official status bar of VS Code
