update dependencies
switch to new Karma API
- let karma handle instanbul instrumentation
- use proper method to count calls
switch to new browserify API
switch from gulp-clean to del
switch from template to header
reorder method to make lint happy
update Travis CI config
- disable sudo infra
- clone at depth 1
- update npm

I tried to just tweak the dependencies, but nothing that I tried resolved the errors. So I decided to just go for it and upgrade all the dependencies, then modernize the build and test harness. Green bar!
