Create personalized "To Do" lists

The site is awesome for creating volunteer shifts, but not useful for managing tasks that don't have a specific time attached (but might have a deadline).

I was thinking about adding some functionality based on http://django-todo.org/ but incorporated into the Personal Dashboard.

Can you take a look and see how hard something like that might be?

Integrating it so it can live in a corner somewhere is not too hard. Would want to test email capability, as those are a real PITA (as we've seen), no matter now nice they seem to be integrate at the start.

The trickier part is making it findable and useful. Things to consider:

• this is built on the django groups and user settings:
  • to participate at all, a user has to be in a group's to do list. That means that as is, you'd be manually assigning users to groups, and we'd probably want to make a separate group or a few of them for this. If you wanted anything automated, that would be something I could write, but we have to design it.
  • to create/remove lists - users have to be labeled as staff (a django user setting). Right now a few of us are (hunter, Red Velvet, Scarlett, you, me) - but mostly because we've assigned it randomly. Our code doesn't use it for anything, but Django-CMS might. Not sure if that matters.
• Would have to add navigation - special menu, user home page, etc --- that's not hard.
• The system is a bit weak on showing/reminding what's done vs. not done - there is a "My Tasks" - but I would have to write extra code if you wanted:
  • to send email reminders to people who have overdue tasks
  • to put an alert on any part of regular pages if the user has overdue tasks, or any tasks at all
  • any sort of report about what's done/not done - the only way to see if a to-do list has tasks that are done/not done is to navigate to the to-do list and count what's done/not-done. There's no summary view.
• there would be no relationship to anything in our current system beyond user accounts. If you wanted to align to-do lists with staff areas, shows, etc, that would take design talk and some time.

All of that put together is a few weeks of work at least (much of this is just a brainstorm, would need to design it to have a better sense of how long it takes).

Taking it piece by piece is not bad. Could do the initial integration, and then see if it's useful.
