a bit unfortunate we have to implement our own palette function, but worth it since seaborn has a ton of recursive dependencies and is a pretty heavy package

Coverage increased (+0.2%) to 88.116% when pulling 565bbd60b383ce4e16b8f59d61811fa136c86576 on drop-seaborn into 433d23c343a9a408c3f37824925898128d6ba1f5 on master.
