changes from the #1415 rmlui-integration branch that can be pushed forward as standalone changes

Should get rebased onto #1438, i.e. drop the lua macros change since these are getting removed.

@ChrisFloofyKitsune the lua macros change was merged so this PR can be reduced to just the SDL stubs and the sol %s change.
