Changed newer Ruby syntax to 1.8 compliant #11

I've still got Ruby 1.8 and the script refused to execute. I needed to make some syntax modifications in order to get it run with this older Ruby version. The functionality should be exactly the same as previously.

I've just created a branch named ruby1.8 to keep this code — open the pull request against that branch please.

Or, alternatively, I could update the README to point to your repository for ruby 1.8 support instead. I don't plan on supporting ruby 1.8 in the long run, anyway... What do you say?
