Here is an email from Randy/Yuku:

Hi Phil!

Good news, now it can be converted correctly to YES file.

I modified the converter so that it can accept empty verses and the empty verses will be skipped in the display of the app.

To Bibledit converter (Please ask Bibledit authors to update this):

  1. Download the latest YetToYes2.jar file from [(http://goo.gl/eV83IS)]
  2. Use the command line switch --ignore-skipped-verses when converting, e.g. java -jar YetToYes2.jar --ignore-skipped-verses filename.yet

I hope all this is understandable to you! This is fantastic news to me, because it means that we can use this high quality app for displaying our translations that are in process.

Yes, it is understandable, and I will update the information document accordingly. Thank you.

Note: Why not make the YetToYes2.jar to always ignore skipped verses automatically, while emitting a warning only?

I imagine Yuku (and maybe you also) take a very dim view of translators combining verses. People who write Bible programs often want everything just the same as the standard versions. And people like me rock the boat.

Thank you for doing this. It will be great to be able to give people a quality application to use with our new translations, even if those translations need to be manually installed.

The updated information about the conversion to the Quick Bible format was now entered. A sample result is visible here: https://bibledit.org:8081/exports/Sample/quickbible/readme.html

A while ago, the YetToYes2.jar was made to no longer be part of the Bibledit Cloud program, due to among other reasons, security concerns on Debian, since the YetToYes2.jar is just a binary blob and there's no way to check for Debian, and other operations system, if this binary blob does involve security issues. So it was removed. And information was added about how to download this YetToYes2.jar and how to create the Quick Bible.

I made a YET to YES export and it worked well. The correct string is java -jar YetToYes2.jar --ignore-skipped-verses filename.yet

But the footnotes and cross references were not included in the export. Is there a flag to specify including the footnotes and cross references?

There is not, currently, a flag for importing the footnotes and the cross references into the .yet file. There would be sense in having such a flag, in case YetToYes2.jar supported that. Does YetToYes2.jar support the footnotes and the cross references?

I'm not sure I understand your comment. But the Yes modules that Randy makes show our footnotes and cross references. I assumed that the YetToYes program would include footnote and cross references, but it didn't. Any chances of a solution?

You have answered my question. So it means that Bibledit needs to export the notes too. It didn't so far.

Please let's open this issue. I had forgotten that the footnotes don't show up in Yuku/Randy's programs.

I assume that what you said before means that the YET file has no footnote content in it, and that's why the YES file has no footnotes. Is that right?

That's correct. I need to look into this more, to get the footnotes in the input file for the converter.

It's working already. That means that Bibledit already exports the footnotes to the .yet file. See the sample below.

\v 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.
\v 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

What I meant is that the program can display both. The export to YET still contains NO Footnotes or Cross references, as far as I can tell. They are not displaying in the YES file!

Good! Thanks! I wonder if there is another Flag, like the one for ignoring combined verses. If the footnotes/references get into the YES file, then there must be a flag, which would be mentioned somewhere in Yuku/Randy's documentation.

I am seeing the same as you are seeing, Phil. I have double-checked the .yet file that goes into the converter YetToYes2.jar. But I cannot find anything wrong in the .yet file. Let me ask @yukuku : Are you able to see something wrong here? The files have been attached: One .yet and one .yes file. And the converter YetToYes2.jar too that was used.

The footnote lines in the YET file are fine. And the YES file correctly includes the footnotes.

The problem is, on the verse lines, there are no reference to the footnotes.

For example, there is this footnote line in the YET file:

footnote    59  1   2   1   1:2 The word for “brothers” here...

But on the verse line in the YET file:

verse   59  1   2   Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations,

there are no references to the footnote. It must be made, as follows:

verse   59  1   2   @@Count it all joy, my brothers@<f1@>@/, when you fall into various temptations,

As another example, you can see verse 40 1 2 of this sample file.

It is the weirdest thing about this export! Only some of the footnotes are visible/accessible, and NONE of the cross-references. In Mark 1:1, the very first three footnotes show up, then one in verse 44. The section headings do not appear. Would that be because of them having a cross-reference at the end of each heading? In Hebrews 1, the cross-reference in 5 shows up as a footnote. The footnotes in 6 and 7 do not appear. The poetry format does not appear either. Poetry format shows up for the TB (the Bible Society traditional translation), but not the other one from them. So poetry format can be done. Our old export also did not show poetry formatting. If an issue is closed, will you still see my comment?

The cross-references will be visible as footnotes. This is because Bibledit converts all notes and cross-references as footnotes. If all works well, then all cross-references will be visible as footnotes.

In Mark 1:1, the very first three footnotes show up, then one in verse 44.

Then something weird is going on. The .yet file contains more than just the first three footnotes in Mark 1:1. As an example here is a cross reference in Mark 1:1 that shows up in the .yet file:

The footnotes are at the bottom of the .yet file, but are not referenced in the verse text. See the above two fragments of the .yet file. This will be an error in the converter.

The poetry format does not appear either.

The converter from USFM to the .yet file strips all poetry formatting out. It converts all to plain text only. I don't know how to output poetry format in the .yet file.

Yes, it takes the English name of the book. It does not localise the name.

A new version of Bibledit Cloud will be made available. That has a couple of fixes. The new edition is now building packages for Ubuntu. The packages will be available within hours from now. The new version number, with the fix, is 5.0.734. It fixes the following issues:

The instruction to write cross references are shown in the docs at alkitab.app/developer. It uses xref lines. Please take a look and if there are questions you can ask here.

The .yet file format is so rich in possible formatting markers, that it seems better to me not to repeat code that somebody else already wrote. My plan is to somehow let "BibleMultiConverter" do the work of converting USFM to QuickBible format. While looking into this, I failed to let the BibleMultiConverter convert a sample book of the TSI Bible. Here is the issue that was opened: https://github.com/schierlm/BibleMultiConverter/issues/21

Another way to avoid repeating code on the QuickBible exporter would be to ask the Bible Drop Box at http://freely-given.org/Software/BibleDropBox/ to include this format in their possible output options. In that way there would be one central location where such a conversion is done. And there would not be repeating code to invent the same wheel over and again.

A better way was thought out to hopefully fix all outstanding issues for the export to Quick Bible, in one go. New versions of Bibledit will have a link to an external Bible converter. See an example link here in the demo: http://bibledit.org:8080/manage/exports It links to the https://github.com/bibledit/converters BibleMultiConverter software. This can convert USFM to the Quick Bible format. I expect that it does a better job of converting the USFM to Quick Bible format, than Bibledit does itself. If there's any issues left, these issues cannot now be resolved through the Bibledit software. Rather these issues can be resolved through the BibleMultiConverter software.
