Task 02 Increasing Understanding: Beginning Member Resources #488

Closed warpok closed 3 years ago

warpok commented 3 years ago

Please empower the administrator (me) to set up an organized suite of resources. Every Member user will get the same set of resources. At this level, I suggest that the power to organize or upload new resources not be given to the user. (The Organize button could still show there, but would bring up a note saying that that is an Advanced option not available at the Member level.)

Please give the administrator the power to not only choose colorful dividers, but also the ability to superimpose text on those dividers. Either give more color choices, or allow the administrator to choose from a wheel of colors. If we have dark color dividers, then we will of course need the ability to choose a white or light color for the text, and vice versa.

There is a really important display improvement that we need. Today I defined the \u style for underlining. Then I underlined a textual difference in the Byzantine text. It worked in the editone window. Since the Byz text is one of our Bibles within Bibledit and since I have the Byz text as one of my Resources, I was hoping that the underlining would show up there. But it was worse than not showing the underlining. The underlined words disappeared from the text!

Let me explain some background info: We feel that the Byzantine/Majority text is better for a majority cousin country because it is not open to the charge that the text has been corrupted (as can easily be made of the Ecclectic Greek Text). Bible translations available in Indonesia are almost based on the Ecclectic Text. (Two are based on the Textus Receptus.) Most of our readers will not be able to pick out the differences in the Greek texts. So we want to help them by giving 1-3 resources that will underline words that are different between the texts, the resources also will include English translations of the Byzantine text. This will help people who want to dig into these changes, because we are not footnoting textual changes between the texts in our translation. In our apps, we supply Byzantine Text along with our translation. I hope that underlining in the Byzantine Text in Bibledit, will result in underlining when an app is made with the Scripture App Builder.

Anyway, to come back to the main point, I hope that USFM Resources (not just Bibles within Bibledit) can be made to include bold, underline, italic text, and maybe even highlight colors. Let's make it so that different fonts can be used also. This will greatly add to the accessibility of information in the resources. Right now I mainly need this for the NT resources.

We have found a wonderful resource that has already been (largely) translated into Indonesian, and it is the Free Bible Commentary by Bob Utley. (http://www.freebiblecommentary.org/indonesian_bible_study.htm) One of the things we like about this resource is that Utley gives meaning and definitions of Biblical terms, and information about different historical interpretations, but he doesn't come down and decide everything for you. He gives the reader the tools to make an informed decision.

So we want to take the excellent PDF files (linked above) and transform them into web pages that can be made into a user defined resource in Bibledit. You have nicely provided this information: http://bibledit.org/resource-[book]-[chapter]-[verse].html Genesis = Exodus = Leviticus =

As I look at Utley's commentaries, I think that it won't be an easy task to format these to become a resource in Bibledit. Maybe it would be better to just give people links to the PDF files. We have some resources already (like Barnes Notes, and Constable's Notes) that often do not display nicely in Bibledit. I would rather not have one like that. So my question is, what kind of website would be optimal for linking verses as a resource in Bibledit? Would it be better that each verse becomes a separate page? Or would it be better if chapters were organized with clear verse breaks that Bibledit can access within the longer HTML page?

warpok commented 3 years ago

It has occured to me that the blank translation in the Translate tab and the Resources tab only present a verse-by-verse environment. Because of this I request that we can add a tab to the Basic interface. We might label it Chapter View or Context. For the Indonesian audience, the tab would be a read-only chapter view of the TSI (our translation). The reader would be able to click on a verse to select a verse, and then go to the Resources tab to research the source text and translations.

It would be easier for parsing and linking verses as resources in Bibledit if the text on the website would be already divided into verses, preferably each verse to have its own link.

The TSI is that a work-in-progress? If so, there is also a need for having regular updates so the students always get to see the most recent version of the TSI.

Yes, it is still very much a work in progress. We might limit the books with the TSI to the ones that are ready, curently 37 out of 66. If I am given admin powers, I could schedule to make updates at regular intervals.

When will I be able to log in and set resources up for the member level. Actually, we are calling the lowest free level the Guest level. Then the Member level is the first paid level.

We think that the Member level with the power to install the program and resources on devices will be popular for seminaries where there is zero internet cellular service. (To get the internet, you have to travel 20 Km and sit in a coffee shop.) Because of that, I wonder if you could help us to make a way so that resources could be transfered from a teacher or from student to student via flash disks or wifidirect sharing. When I have previously tried to move resource exports from one device to another, it was not easy.

But anyway, let’s concentrate on the Cloud level first.

The administrator (you) has the ability to set up the resources for the user or users of the Indonesian version of Bibledit Cloud.

This is how to do it:

  1. Log in under the name of the user (via Settings / Users / Login).
  2. Set up all the Resources as desired.
  3. Logout.

This features request is not solely for the Indonesian version of Bibledit Cloud, it seems, but the feature would be useful for anyone using Bibledit (Cloud). Would you mind to open a separate issue for this request? That makes it easier for me to track its progress.

This is a feature request that is useful for the Indonesian Bibledit Cloud, for reasons you have given, but I think it will also be useful for all users of Bibledit Cloud in general. So would you mind to open a special feature request for this? It's quite a work to get this implemented, so it's easier to have and track this feature in a dedicated issue.

It sounds like you may have misunderstood what I want. All students get the same thoughtfully prepared suite of resources. It sounds like from the above that I would need to log in to each student account and give them the resources. I have done that sometimes for people, and it is very time consuming, and I would never get the all to be the same, with all the dividers in the right place.

But maybe that’s not what you meant. I’ll try logging in to see what Ican do.

warpok commented 3 years ago

I logged in as the admin, and set up some resources. Then I went to the guest user, and the guest user did not have the resources yet.

I will make separate smaller Tasks for this and the other things you mentioned. Thanks so much for how you are helping us.

That initial method was that you would need to log into each student account and set up their resources. I understand that this is a lot of work, and harder to get consistent for every student. I've created a new method now. That method has one central place where to set up all the resources. And that resource configuration will get copied to each known student account, every minute.

This is how to do it now:

  1. Go to http://bibledit.org:8082/resource/index
  2. Set up the resources.
  3. (There's no step 3, it's all done now, all student instances get that configuration too :)
warpok commented 3 years ago

Incredibly WONDERFUL! Thanks so much. Will I upload the USFM resources in the Admin interface? I will try that now.

warpok commented 3 years ago

I see that that 8082 site is not the same as the admin site that you gave me before. However I see that I can create a Bible, and now I am importing text into it, and then I will be able to convert that to a USFM resource. So I am starting to do that for the other USFM resources.

warpok commented 3 years ago

Incidentally, the 8082 port seems to stop working. Our https site and other Internet is continuing to work for me, but the 8082 port stops for long periods.

warpok commented 3 years ago

The process of creating a USFM resource worked on the 8082 site. Thanks!

teusbenschop commented 3 years ago

Incidentally, the 8082 port seems to stop working. Our https site and other Internet is continuing to work for me, but the 8082 port stops for long periods.

It stopped working for the duration of creating a backup of the entire site. That backup was eating up all available bandwidth. In my timezone the backup runs during the night. In your timezone it might be during your working hours.

The solution applied now is to reduce the bandwidth that the backup procedure takes, to about half of the available bandwidth. The remainder of the bandwidth will then be available for working on the site at port 8082.

The sites on port 8080 and 2016 were not affected because they are on another link, a link with very high available band width.

teusbenschop commented 3 years ago

The process of creating a USFM resource worked on the 8082 site. Thanks!

That is great. That is then the central place to put the USFM resources.

I have updated the script to synchronise data from port 8082 to the student accounts. The script now also synchronises the USFM resources.

warpok commented 3 years ago

Help! The 8082 site worked for me all morning. Now it is asking me for a password. Neither of the two passwords that you gave me before work. When I get in again I will set up a password. The login page doesn't have a forgot password link. Phil

warpok commented 3 years ago

I must have typed the password wrongly. Thanks!

teusbenschop commented 3 years ago

I happened to be working on the 8082 website, that may have caused the glitch too.

It's important to note that the resources of the username now on 8082 are the resources being copied to the student accounts. No other resources from any other username on 8082 will be synchronised to the student account, only from the username now there on 8082. This is how it works currently.

If you decide on another username, that's possible, please let me know, so the synchronise scripts can be updated to take their resources from another username.

warpok commented 3 years ago

I have just tried 6 times and I cannot log in! I did once just recently! Please see my email.

warpok commented 3 years ago

Neither login is working now: The one I set up (which didn't have all the new resources installed yet) and the old long one that you made.

teusbenschop commented 3 years ago

It works now, I logged in and created the second one, so both are functional now.

warpok commented 3 years ago

I have just tried in different browsers. Do both have all the resources, or only the longname one?

warpok commented 3 years ago

I just succeeded with the o-name.

teusbenschop commented 3 years ago

Only the long name one has the resources, the other one probably not.

warpok commented 3 years ago

The longusername one does not work. Truly.

warpok commented 3 years ago

longusername: Doesn't work using my remote Windows PC, Doesn't work for chrome browser in Android.

warpok commented 3 years ago

Long user name doesn't work on my Linux Chrome browser.

teusbenschop commented 3 years ago

That is strange, I am now logged in with that long username, that's from macOS.

warpok commented 3 years ago

The o-username seems to work on Android also. Please just transfer everything to that one. I'm sure I am typing the longusername correctly. But it refuses to work.

warpok commented 3 years ago

OKay, I think I know what happened. I think I changed the longusername login to the o-username and my default password. But the result is that I have lost all the resources that I made in that account. If they are gone for good, I will install them in the new account. Please advise. I am hoping that you can still find the resources.

teusbenschop commented 3 years ago

I found the active resources and they are now restored to the o-account.

warpok commented 3 years ago

Long username doesn't work on my Firefox browser either on Linux. The o-username works again on Firefox, but I only have 4 resources and a divider. I had around 15 resources in the longusername account.

warpok commented 3 years ago

It is weird also, that the o-username account doesn't seem to be remembering my Preferences. The one exception is that it remembers that I want to use colon for a chapter:verse separator.

warpok commented 3 years ago

I found the active resources and they are now restored to the o-account.

That is great, but I can't see them. Is there a propagation lag?

warpok commented 3 years ago

Is it OK for me to continue installing resources in the o-account, assuming things will come right? Or should I stop? I have just installed the BIS resource.

warpok commented 3 years ago

Hey! The resources ARE in the o-account! They are just not installed yet! So all I need to do is install them and I will be all set. Whew! I won't have to make Bibles and convert them to resources. Thanks!

teusbenschop commented 3 years ago

It's good that it now is all working, happy to see things unfold and get ready for the first students to come in.

So I am seeing all tasks in this issue were completed, so I am closing the issue. Please reopen if needed.
