BEP: Optically Pumped Magnetometer-based Magnetoencephalography (OPM-MEG) #1676

Hello, @bids-maintenance and everyone in the BIDS community,

We are currently working on the proposal for incorporating optically pumped magnetometer-based magnetoencephalography (OPM-MEG) into BIDS specification. Here is an initial draft of the BIDS extension proposal.

OPM-MEG is an emerging non-invasive brain imaging method that has garnered significant attention in the field of cognitive science. It offers several advantages, such as improved signal quality and reduced installation and maintenance costs. Additionally, it boasts greater portability and versatility when compared to SQUID MEG systems, thereby expanding its potential roles for measuring biomagnetic signals (e.g., hyperscanning). Despite these advantages, OPM-MEG is still in its infancy. So far, there is a lack of a common specification for organizing OPM-MEG data, making it challenging to share and collaborate with other researchers.

It is noteworthy that although OPM-MEG is one implementation of MEG, it cannot be seamlessly integrated into the current framework of BEP008 (MEG-BIDS), given its extensive flexibility and highly customizable acquisition configuration. Here, to meet the potential need in managing OPM-MEG data and in line with the spirit of Open Science, we propose BEP for OPM (maybe we can call it OPM-MEG-BIDS?). This specification takes into consideration the unique aspects of OPM-MEG and aims at establishing a standardized approach for formatting, organizing, and exchanging OPM-MEG data that the research community can widely adopt.

This proposal is inspired by BEP008 (MEG-BIDS), BEP006 (EEG-BIDS), and BEP010 (iEEG-BIDS). We express our sincere gratitude to the contributors who have been involved in drafting and maintaining these three proposals.

PS: we have read some constructive discussions as listed below, before drafting this BEP: 2022 - https://mne.discourse.group/t/opm-bids-question/5022 2018 - https://groups.google.com/g/bids-discussion/c/-d4E0cbQt6Q/m/l9lYRPngAwAJ

We enthusiastically invite feedback and contributions from the BIDS community for this preliminary draft! Thanks!

Thanks for your draft and thoughts about integrating OPM-MEG into BIDS. We are also working with OPM-MEG data, and in fact I'm sitting here at Brainhack Nordic with some others including @CPernet and @jacobvaever brainstorming what is missing from the existing MEG specification. As of right now, our consensus is that there's only a few minor details to revise with the existing MEG-BIDS spec so it would be better to integrate OPM-MEG within that spec. This view also seems to be supported in the 2022 MNE and 2018 BIDS discussion forums that you've referenced above. Can you clarify why you think a separate BEP is needed for OPM-MEG?

CPernet commented 8 months ago

from my limited knowledge of that topic, it looks like an entity to specify if it is a fix helmet or scalp-MEG is needed, allowing to turn off many required things from fix helmet not available in OPM, and that's about it

@sarangnemo @jacobvaever could you push a 0kb dataset in the BIDS example
