: Download tun module on demand for users without tun.ko available for the phone. #4

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Some users may have root on their build, but not have the tun module, if
this is possible we should download the tun.ko module that matches their
kernel and load it.

Alternatively, if there is no tun.ko module, try to grab system information
that will allow us to compile a module that will match their build
environment. (Long term, I believe there should be a tun.ko module with
the phone.. us doing the legwork on this is kind of lame).

There is no time line to implement this feature, but feel free to make a
comment if you have information on improving or obsoleting this feature
request.

Using an HTC Magic from Rogers (Canada) (32A device), using a modded Cyanogen
ROM.
Apparantely, there's no tun.ko in the build. I've tried everything I can think
of to
load it (transferred to sdcard, modprobed it, etc. I couldn't cp it to anything
under
root).

The ROM I'm using is here: Cyanogen 4.0.2 32a
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544854

Let me know if I can help with logcats, testing something, etc. As long as there
isn't extra risk to brick this thing.

I just found out this build has built in VPN options:

PPTP VPN
L2TP VPN
L2TP/IPSec PSK VPN - Pre-shared key based
L2TP/IPSec VPN L2TP/IPSec CRT VPN - Certificate based L2TP/IPSec VPN

None of them have the IPSec ID/Pasword, though, so it makes me wonder if these
are
different types. I don't know too much about VPN, though, but maybe this info
can
help you (perhaps there's a different module it's using you could make use
of...).

I have a Sprint HTC Hero and am looking for the tun.ko module (much like a lot
of
people). I'm using kernal version 2.6.27-533ce29d. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

Older builds of the Hero ROM did have the tun.ko module installed in the
kernel, but
when eViL D (the author of the hero rom) moved to using newer BFS kernels then
this
disappeared. Short of compiling the module back into the kernel I don't see how
this
is going to get fixed.... :-( installing the module by hand (modprobe etc)
doesn't
seem to work. If someone had some instructions on how to do this manually I
would
gladly try them.

Cheers, Jon

Unfortunately we don't have the bandwidth or the devices to build tun.ko
modules. If
anyone has the technical know-how and is able to do so, please let me know and
I will
upload it to the project site for others to use.

Hi there. Congrats for this cool project. I'm using Cyanogen 4.2.11.1 and I'm
having
the same issues other users have. So if anyone can help me out on this I'd
really
appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi,

I have a Samsung Galaxy i7500 and upgraded to the Donut Release. I managed to
root
the
phone but I am unable to find a suitable tun.ko. I keep
getting the error that --- tun: version magic '2.6.29-omap1-g0dd7e0b preempt
mod_unload modversions ARMv7 ' should be '2.6.29 preempt mod_unload ARMv6 ' ---
Any
guidance would help. The vpnc gui just exits.

Thanks!

My kernel is 2.6.32.15-g746f4f0 and I need the tun.ko file for this. How can I
look/compile this? Is it safe to install another kernel? Very new to this, but
I was able to successfully install 3.26.651.6 Froyo DeOdexed RevE.1, but don't
know how to update a kernel that will work with VPN Connections.

Thanks very much in advance!
