This controller really needs CPOL and CPHA to 1 on the SPI.
Apparently you changed it in the arduino version but not on the atmel one.
(see comments on version 1.14 , file u8g_com_atmega_st7920_hw_spi.c line#136)

I suggest you to change it also on this file.
