I'm not suggesting we mimick this structure, but rather look at the intent behind menus. Should we have a menu? Would it make what the Vent Stream offers more obvious? Would it incite people to explore & click more? Would it make it easier for users to categorize their vent & as such, increase venting?
I was playing around with some placement in Omni. These are stupendously unattractive, but I was thinking about the above.
As a user, I want to see a menu of vent stream categories so that I don't have to search to figure out what content the Vent Stream offers.
Reddit & Digg have menus (not comprehensive) of their categories:
