I realize emphasis is on pep8, but commenting on a few easy reductions. Do you think that parse_first_database and parse_second_database should be decomposed given the redundancy in code (at least what I can see from this PR)? If so, I'll open an issue

Few minor comments. Most could be done in a separate PR. One blocking (the "alg" question). Otherwise :+1:
