this should include:

[ ] allow row labels to be based on non-hierarchical data
[ ] improve handling of the case where the user specifies an observation metadata category to use in the label and it is not present in the table (currently that is ignore, and just the identifiers are used, which can be confusing for users)

[ ] general re-factoring of the code, it's very messy and buggy as pointed out by @wasade

I think there's a bug in the default log transformation code as well. The documentation states that zero entries will have a pseudocount added prior to transformation, but as noted in this forum question, that doesn't seem to be happening.
