This stack overflow thread seems to provide 2 different methods for going forward with a biohackathons.github.io repo that does not have the forked status, as in "forked from NCBI-Hackathons/ncbi-hackathons.github.io".
The reason to unfork the repo is that, any of us who work on it will then get github contribution credit (see these github contribution docs).
Not a big deal, but the least we can do for anyone who contributes to this open source effort 🎉
