Barry关于denotes,refer to和designate的辨析。

a denotes b = someone has created an information content entity a in order to specifically refer to some entity b

to denote = to signify directly; refer to specifically…

to refer to = to use language in such a way as to denote; thus if I say ‘John is asleep’ than I refer to John be denoting John as part of a sentence

to designate = same as to denote
