Symbols not showing

Hi
I am using the Icelandic keyboard and I've loved it.  BUT.....when I type 
Icelanic symbols, such as æ,ð,þ,ö,á,í,ó and so on......they are not 
showing when I use them in sms.
I type as usual, see the symbols myself, but when the other people get the 
text, the symbols are not showing.
Example.....I type "þokkalega" but you would see it as "?okkalega"
I would type "Kári þarf að æfa sönginn" you would see "Kari ?arf a? ?fa 
sönginn" with ö being the only symbol showing.......
I am using Samsung Galaxy S, Gingerbread 2.3.3
Can you fix this please or tell me if there's something I can change cause this 
is really annoing.

I have the same problem. Getting really  frustrated.. Have a Galaxy S2. Please, 
do I have to adjust the settings somehow?

This is not a problem with the Scandinavian keyboard, it's an issue with the 
SMS settings.  A friend of mine had the same problem but he was able to fix it.
I don't remember exactly what settings to change, but I think you should be 
able to find it if you look carefully enough, I think it was the charset used 
for SMS, change it to UTF-8...

Found it, you go to SMS settings, find input mode, and I set it to Automatic, 
and that worked
