As mentioned in this comment, the project is currently abandoned, but not dead! It will eventually be reborn in another form in the distant future, so I suggest you:
- either use and contribute to Kiwix Desktop, which is actively maintained by the creators of the zim file format and is available as an AppImage
- or create your own project; I discourage you from forking this one, as it was my very first project written without an IDE and is full of bad practices ^^
I'm keeping this issue open because the suggestion is relevant.
Many users, including me, do not want to install Flatpak - because it runs a background daemon.
From the user perspective - AppImage is simpler - just download one executable file.
