Good evening everyone! Thank you for your post. I own the Roland V8HD myself and was able to test it today. Unfortunately I haven't managed to do it yet or understood how to set the preview or program channel via the midi and Compaion. The connection to the console is there and works. I would be very grateful for an update, ideal for a tutorial video.
The google doc linked above gives the instructions to use the V8HD, with screenshots of what to do - Please let me know what is missing from that: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hxFIj-TWiDsVSrtrDyjcRFWI1tpy9A6yMHnUcEuh8oU/edit?usp=sharing
** Working in Companion 3.0.1 and Midi-Relay 3.1.2, See above link for details ***
According to the Midi Relay page there is currently an issue with the SysEx Message always failing.
Again, the above google doc shows the correct formatting for SysEx messages. I get it's frustrating as there is no clear documentation, but the correct format to send SysEx commands in midi-relay is:
"0xF0,0x41,0x10,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x68,0x12,0x00,0x12,0x01,0x00,0x6D,0xF7" Roland start/id, stays the same Address Data Checksum End
Not "F0, 41 10 00 00 00 68 12 00 12 01 00 6D F7"
I took trial and error to figure this out, but we have this successfully working with companion 2.4 and midi-relay 2.4.0 (does not work on 2.2.0)
So I'm using version 2.4.0 on Windows 10:
Just tested on 2.2 and 2.4 - 2.2 gave the "invalid sysex" error - 2.4 worked
Thank you for the detailed instructions. I've now got the system up and running and I'm very grateful to you!
It would be ideal if the Google document allowed texts to be copied out.
Are these all commands that can be executed with the SysEx Messeng? I'm missing the commands for the DSK, unfortunately I'm not that smart and I couldn't find out what I need to take from the link https://static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/V-8HD_reference_v2_eng03_W.pdf enter this in Companion. Could you possibly also give instructions on this?
Glad it's helpful - you've helped make it better! I didn't know google docs didn't let you copy, I've fixed that - Also didn't know that midi-relay 2.2 did not work - All good stuff.
I've made a short video that hopefully explains how to create your own SysEx commands for the Roland V-8HD https://youtu.be/SUJvdQlY2V4

Hello everyone, I'm using the companion 3.0 that already has the midi relay module (tech ministry midi relay) and I installed the midi relay software v3.07 on my macbook, I entered the commands (sysex) from the google document table that you mentioned and I still couldn't make it work. Is the module finalized and operational? Does the module that is already installed on the companion 3.0 work for the v-8hd? The midi port of the v-8hd was correctly selected in the midi relay module, I configured the ip correctly, the communication port (4000) is ok, I inserted several sysex commands from the google table above, but nothing happens when testing the emulator buttons stream deck. Thanks in advance
Unfortunately midi-relay 3.0+ removed the setting page and the logging is not helpful, so I am not seeing any error messages, and therefore not able to see what the issue might be.
You could try using midi-relay 2.4 with companion 3.0 and see if that works.
I'm staying on midi-relay 2.4 and companion 2.4.2 for now.
yesterday I tried adding random midi CC commands instead of sysex and at least there was some response from the v-8hd device, i.e. communication between companion and video switcher seems ok, could it be that the sysex commands have changed/updated due to some update of videoswitcher firmware? I couldn't find midi relay 2.4, only 2.01 Thanks for the feedback.
Please, can you help me? why are there no available midi ports? I plugged in an ssl2 just to test if it would show up, as I don't have the roland v-8hd with me.

This is a midi-relay/companion issue, not specific to the Roland V-8HD - Please ask on the facebook page or midi-relay page.

I've made a short video that explains how to create your own SysEx commands for the Roland V-8HD https://youtu.be/SUJvdQlY2V4
CUT and FADE command
Hi, thanks for the message. I've watched your video several times... and I must admit that I wasn't able to create the right commands for CUT and FADE :-(

This info is in the document already - You don't need to calculate a sysex message, just use at Control Change command Auto Fade: Controller 55, Value 1 Cut: Controller 54, Value 1
The name of the device, hardware, or software you would like to control. Roland V-8HD Video Switcher
What you would like to be able to make it do from Companion. Full control of video switching, PiP, source setting, etc
