refactored tests to fit the current implementation #35

Changed the naming of stuff so the tests match the current internal API

Thanks for the contribution. I had a few intermediate commits that hadn't been pushed yet that addressed some of these issues as well. I've updated the PR to harmonize the changes and will merge it now.
