Unlock with biometrics no longer works; causing looping behavior where it never accepts it #5372

Open USAPaulQ opened 1 year ago

USAPaulQ commented 1 year ago

Steps To Reproduce

  1. Go to '...'
  2. Click on '....'
  3. Scroll down to '....'
  4. Click on '...'

Expected Result

I click on Chrome icon, it pops up the biometric prompt, I give it, does not unlock.

Actual Result

When I click on the Bitwarden icon in Chrome, it presents me with a box to enter my password or "unlock with biometrics." It used to just go ahead with biometrics. I click biometrics and it goes into an endless loop of recognizing me, then showing the pop-up with the option to click "OK" or "Cancel." I click ok. It just keeps generating - the biometrics box, nothing unlocks.

When logging into the desktop client, it looks pretty much the same and asks me to unlock with biometrics but it doesn't unlock and it presents another biometric pop-up.

Also - All of these biometric prompts are showing up under the currently open window(s). I just happen to see the window appear in my taskbar. I click it, opens the biometric unlock..... etc. Same routine.

Screenshots or Videos

Additional Context

Right now, my camera is on and there are 6 pop-ups requesting my OK (it's already recognized me). I have to close it all to get the camera to turn off. Thanks for your help!

Hello there,

We are aware of this issue. A potential fix could be reinstalling your Bitwarden clients. Could you please try that?

USAPaulQ commented 1 year ago

Hi -

I reinstalled the desktop app (using the installer you posted). I didn't uninstall the phone app because I assume that should be unrelated.

I went into the settings of the desktop app and selected all my options including using Windows Hello.

I turned on the browser integration as well.

The Chrome extension keeps telling me browser integration is not set up. I checked it twice and it is. Tried exiting BW and going back in. This is actually better than what it was doing before - opening multiple instances of the login window. Difference now is I can't turn Windows Hello on at all.

I reinstalled the Chrome extension. If I check off the biometrics option, it tells me I need to set up the desktop app. I did. Will not check it off.

I can log into the desktop app with biometrics.

Let me know if you want me to try something else. Looking forward to a fix. Good luck!

Paul

Same issue here but I can't even unlock the desktop app using windows hello face recognition.

When I click Ok, the bitwarden screen reloads as if it's about to load my vault, then returns to the login screen.

Downgrading to 2023.3.2 fixes issue

USAPaulQ commented 1 year ago

I was coming here to say it no longer seems to be happening. In fact, I just now unlocked my vault with Windows Hello. I didn't have to downgrade because that's the version I'm on:

Version 2023.4.0 Shell 21.3.1

I don't know what happened. I didn't check the version before to see what I was on when it wasn't working - but, you're right, it works on 2023.4.0. If I check for updates, it says I have the latest.

Glad it's working!!!

jonatino commented 1 year ago

@USAPaulQ I had a typo I actually downgraded to 2023.3.2 to fix the issue. Although I realize now that Bitwarden has autoupdated again to 2023.4.0 but functionality seems to still be working.

UPDATE: my (unrelated?) issue resolved

During the process of performing troubleshooting steps found elsewhere (disable browser integration & restart laptop), the Bitwarden desktop client started with biometrics disabled for my home account. Once I reconfigured it (and re-enabled browser integration), the browser plugins began working for me again.

Best of luck to those still suffering from this issue 🍀🤞🏻🧧

I'm experiencing this or a related issue, but not consistently:

Both my home and work Bitwarden accounts were unlocked on the Bitwarden desktop client during testing.

Software Version
macOS Ventura 13.4
Chrome 114.0.5735.106 (Official Build) (arm64)
Firefox 114.0.1
Safari 16.5 (18615.2.9.11.4)
Bitwarden browser client plugin (all browsers) 2023.5.0
Bitwarden desktop client 2023.5.0 (9051)

Everything worked fine for me, last week (Thursday 2023-06-08).

The reported issues are still happening on Windows 11 for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.

I'm experiencing this. It worked when I set it up initially, but since it has failed in the same way described by the op. Bitwarden is updated and Firefox extension is 2024.2.1.
