+1 to this, it would be great to see the Flatpak version of Bitwarden made official. I like using Flatpak for most of my apps, because of the increased desktop integration (compared to AppImage) and being able to update them all in one place, along with my deb packages. The Flatpak version of Bitwarden is also the version that appears in most distributions' official app stores.
Although the app being maintained by the community isn't enough to push me to install the AppImage version, it would be more secure to have direct distribution for the Flatpak version, especially for an app used to store passwords. I trust the community developers, but they could (in theory) modify Bitwarden before distributing it as a Flatpak and compromise peoples' passwords.
I had no idea that the Discord Flatpak was made official btw, I installed it while it was still unofficial. That's pretty cool. Hope more unofficial Flatpak apps are made official in the future (perhaps even Google Chrome, one day!)
Hi @EuriNaiz
Thanks for the report! Bitwarden plans to officially maintain the Flatpak distribution. We already have this tracked internally, but we'll leave this up for public tracking. If you'd like to add any comments or +1's, please consider adding them to the related community forum thread.
Thanks!
We use GitHub issues as a place to track bugs and other development related issues. The Bitwarden Community Forums has a Feature Requests section for submitting, voting for, and discussing requests like this one.
Please sign up on our forums and search to see if this request already exists. If so, you can vote for it and contribute to any discussions about it. If not, you can re-create the request there so that it can be properly tracked.
This issue will now be closed. Thanks!
@luc-bw If you look here: https://github.com/bitwarden/desktop/issues/188 this was already planned for 2021, now you just specify that Bitwarden plans to do it, not even a time frame or anything, why is this not done already or planned with a fixed time frame?
Really ?
I have received word that the official Flatpak will be released on the same day as Hollow Knight: Silksong.
đŸ¤¡
What ?
Is this meant to be a joke, that it may not happen or a metaphor of the said game or project's release date aligning with ?
@IkelAtomig that's a joke. obviously this is going to happen on the same day as the release of Half-Life 3
So, I guess, we will never have it ?
Steps To Reproduce
Recently Flatpak package got broken and the response of the issues reports where basically "is not our problem and use appimage, now the issue is closed". So, I propose a solution: take control of the flatpak package and make it official.
Flathub use to have apps maintained by the community, but when the original dev ask the ownership, they just give it to him/her. Why? Is better to have direct distribution. Recently Discord got verified and now the flathub package is official, so, the more sensible is to do the same as they.
Flatpak is the only way to install apps on Fedora Silverblue, Suse MicroOS, Endless OS, is the 1st way on VanillaOS and is so used on other distros, so, is necessary a flatpak package taking in count that flathub is the official linux store and the future of linux apps is flatpak.
Flatpaks are universal and work the same way in all linux distros, Even on ChromeOS!. Is really easy to push packages to flathub, and even can be automatised with CI/CD, and the packages are updates automatically. So, not having a flatpak package for time reasons is just an excuse.
Expected Result
An official Flatpak package
Actual Result
An unofficial package with problems.
