I did a full-upgrade on my raspberry just yesterday. A lot of packages were updated and I realized that "cups" was installed. After a reboot my wordclock just started with "Hi" on startup and then stuck.
I invested some time and after removing two packages I could get it back to work:
cups
pulseaudio
In case someone else experience the same it might help you saving some hours of investigation.
