See if video has subtitles available? #25

Open viking2 opened 3 years ago

viking2 commented 3 years ago

In Plex I can navigate to a video to see if it has subtitles before I start playing it. Is it possible to see this in your skin and Kodi?

I suspect that Kodi does not have this feature, and I need to start playing the video and then open the video controls to see if there is a subtitle available?

bkury commented 3 years ago

That's actually possible. I'm thinking about adding this to the sidebar (mediaflags) and/or as an additional overlay.

What do you think?

viking2 commented 3 years ago

An overlay would have to be on a video thumbnail, right? I am using ViewType = List with Sidebar, so I would like to see the subtitle in the Sidebar.

BTW, the sidebar shows descriptions. Sometimes it is too long to display. Is there any way to scroll the description?

bkury commented 3 years ago

Preferences --> Viewtype --> Enable "Scroll Plot"

Another option to see more of the plot is to open the video info screen: Context Menu --> Information

viking2 commented 3 years ago

Ok. Thanks! I wish that I could scroll manually somehow. The auto-scroll is a bit annoying. Context menu is maybe a better choice.

bkury commented 3 years ago

Keep in mind that you can also assign the "info" action to a dedicated remote button. (Same as you did with the "delete" action)

viking2 commented 3 years ago

I just realized that the "info button" on the MCERemote actually brings up the info shown in Context Menu --> Information. However, for several TV-shows, the info still does not fit on the Information screen. It seems that the only choice is the annoying auto-scrolling :-(.

bkury commented 3 years ago

Yes, I know that this is only a temporary solution for now but there are bigger UI updates coming after the next v2.6 release. (including a redesigned and interactive information screen)

Preview for upcoming v2.6 with your subtitle (CC) changes included (work in progress, still missing studio logo and ratings) cc

Sidenote: There is also a new addon (plugin.universal.data) ready for testing in the Night repository. It will get you News, Sport, Movie/TV top lists and much more. Night v2.6 will have integrated widget support for it.

viking2 commented 3 years ago

Do you have an ETA for the 2.6 and the following big release? Will you get the TV-Show ratings from IMDb? Like the IMDb Add-on?

Can the CC show the language? I need it in English, but sometimes only other languages are available. I am currently depending on a Plex Server Add-on to download the subtitles.

================= BTW, completely off topic, but maybe you know? I posted a question on the Kodi forum 5 months ago but nobody answered (https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=359937):

In Kodi, I believe that there are two options to download subtitles:

  1. As a Service (e.g. see here https://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Set_up_subtitle_services) or
  2. By using an Addon (e.g. see here: https://howtomediacenter.com/en/tutorial...s-on-kodi/)

I am a bit confused about which method to use: add directly in Kodi as a service or download Add-ons?

bkury commented 3 years ago

About 1-2 weeks from now. After that I'm going to switch to smaller updates but they will be more frequent

Will you get the TV-Show ratings from IMDb? Like the IMDb Add-on?

No, I want to do it without any 3rd party addons e.g. :

Can the CC show the language? I need it in English, but sometimes only other languages are available.

Yes, but this information will be on the video information screen only. Sidebar will only show "CC" if there are subtitles available because there is just no space available to display more than that.

I hardly use subtitles but why would you use a KODI addon if the plex server can do it for you anyway?

bkury commented 3 years ago

What I could do is an "Show CC only if a specific language (e.g. english) subtitle is available" option, if that is what you are asking.

viking2 commented 3 years ago

No, I want to do it without any 3rd party addons e.g. :

* KODIs "Universal Scraper" already supports multiple rating sources for movies and tvshows

* PlexKodiConnect also provides different rating sources

I meant to ask if you would do it w/o an Add-on. I currently see TV show ratings on Kodi, but I don't know where they are coming from..?? I would like to have IMDb ratings instead but I haven't installed the Add-on yet. What would be different if you incorporate it in the skin vs if I use the IMDb Add-on? I tried PlexKodiConnect but gave up on it. There is no way to get IMDb rating for TV shows using Plex Server. I am also trying to skip Plex Server altogether.

The Subtitle Add-On (Sub-zero) is not working well with the newer versions of the Plex server. I am trying to get rid of the Plex server altogether.

I guess that would be nice! Maybe have the CC in another color if English is available, or Append -E (e.g. CC-E if English is available)?

Yes, different color would be the best solution.

I'm using PLEX built-in OpenSubtitles.org feature (Settings --> Agents --> Movies/Shows --> OpenSubtitles.org). It works for me, no need to use an add-on.

May I ask why you gave up on plex / plexkodiconnect? Because I'm also working on a KODI fork/package which among other things should make it much easier to setup and work with plex. (Windows TEST build here: https://github.com/bkury/OpenHT/releases)

I currently see TV show ratings on Kodi, but I don't know where they are coming from..?? I would like to have IMDb ratings instead but I haven't installed the Add-on yet.

I think the default rating source is IMDB for most KODI scrapers. Unfortunately, KODI is very inconsistent when it comes to showing multiple rating sources in skins. It looks like that I have to use an 3rd party add-on to show more than one rating source.

Anyway, with Night v2.6 you should only need to install an additional add-on to see ratings from multiple sources like IMDB, Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes, ...

viking2 commented 3 years ago

I had been using Plex for several years, but I wanted to have TV show ratings. However, that is currently not possible with Plex or any Add-on. I also had issues with the new Server versions that dropped support for the Sub-zero subtitles Add-on. Finally, I have used OpenPHT but it sometimes fails to play TV-shows, and in particular when it doesn't like the subtitles (and I really dislike the "newish" Plex Media Player).

I therefore started using Kodi with the Light IMDb Ratings Add-on (https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=316342). I then installed PlexCodiConnect, and since it uses the Plex database, all my Kodi ratings in the Kodi database were deleted :-(.

I have no important use for a Server as I only watch content on my local PC. I need subtitles and ratings and a good interface (like your Night skin); that is all...

BTW, I looked at your OpenHT link, but I don't understand it's purpose? Would I install it instead of the regular Kodi (I currently use v18.9)? What would I download and install...?

What would the advantages be? Would it be similar to Kodi with plexkodiconnect? Wouldn't it have the same problem that I had (e.g. it would overwrite my show ratings)?

I would be very interested to know how you could add TV show ratings (e.g. IMDb) to the Plex database. I have been told it is not possible; I have tried the only Plex Add-on that I am aware of: https://github.com/mynttt/UpdateTool (See my comments there; https://github.com/mynttt/UpdateTool/issues/49)

p.s. I think it would be great if you discuss the advantages of your OpenHT vs regular Kodi here: https://github.com/bkury/OpenHT/releases, and it is not clear what to download and install. Is it an Add-on maybe?

OpenHT is a standalone KODI package/fork and can be installed alongside KODI. It's basically a more user-friendly version of KODI and comes with some modifications and improvements like :

It's basically my playground to create something which I think would be great to have in a home theater. In the end this also allows me to address things like your plexkodiconnect / rating problem in the future.

So it is not really ready to use a replacement for my regular Kodi installation yet? The only download links that I can see are for regular Kodi (e.g. 19.1)?

I already use it as my daily driver for months. It shouldn't be different for you especially since you are using Night anyway but you will get all the additional stuff I mentioned above.

The only download links that I can see are for regular Kodi (e.g. 19.1)?

You don't see the download link for windows when going to https://github.com/bkury/OpenHT/releases ? (Windows, 64bit, Download Link)

Openht (Win64) Direct Download Link: https://github.com/bkury/OpenHT/releases/download/18.9.0/OpenHT-18.9.0-win64.exe

viking2 commented 3 years ago

I never completely understood how github works. When I go the main page, https://github.com/bkury/OpenHT, I can not see a link that would bring me to https://github.com/bkury/OpenHT/releases. How would a novice (like myself) know to go to https://github.com/bkury/OpenHT/releases to find the download link?

OpenHT appears to be built on Kodi 18.9? Can I install it as a portable version so I can continue to use my current Kodi setup? If I understand correctly, OpenHT is using plexkodiconnect and all my TV show ratings will again disappear? (I had to remove plexkodiconnect and use Kodi instead of Plex database to get them back).

BTW, what is "[ADDON] plugin.video.plexkodiconnect v2.12.25 "? Is that just the "regular" plexkodiconnect?

bkury commented 3 years ago

OpenHT appears to be built on Kodi 18.9?

Yes, for now. (KODI v19 switched to python3 and not all addons are compatible yet)

Can I install it as a portable version so I can continue to use my current Kodi setup?

Yes, OpenHT is standalone. It's using different data and install directories, it shouldn't change or damage your KODI setup/installation in any way. (although it's never a bad idea to make a backup before doing anything)

If I understand correctly, OpenHT is using plexkodiconnect and all my TV show ratings will again disappear? (I had to remove plexkodiconnect and use Kodi instead of Plex database to get them back).

You don't need to use PlexKodiConnect if you don't want to. OpenHT just makes it easier to get started with PlexKodiConnect/EMBY because you don't have to know how KODI repositories work or how to install plexkodiconnect.

The idea is to just enable PlexKodiConnect on the setup screen and you should be good to go but even if you don't use plex you can still benefit from other features.

BTW, what is "[ADDON] plugin.video.plexkodiconnect v2.12.25 "? Is that just the "regular" plexkodiconnect?

Yes, with some minor setup tweaks.
