The fellows are meeting with the Mozilla Science Lab team in New York for 'on-boarding' - we each will give a presentation (25-30 mins including questions) introducing ourselves.

This issue is a space for me to plan my presentation.

Here are some guiding points, and note - the first few weeks of the Fellowship are designed for you to explore and test ideas, so what's presented here can change after this week. Get creative!

1. Biographical info

ideas:

• track my personality traits, values, skills, relationships over time
• display as (interactive) timeline where I can pause on key events and talk
• or as a simple plot over time - a line for each trait, value, skill, events as points, relationships as... something else. Maybe in D3?
• also location over time

2. Sources of inspiration

• hip-hop/grime music
• hackers (type 1)
• hackers (type 2)
• principled people: Aaron Swartz, Julia Reda, PMR

3. my take on open science

• the Platonian science is about creating, systematising and enabling the use of knowledge
• in reality the system has been horribly corrupted
• various forces at play:
  • limited funding leads to competition for resources (unavoidable?)
  • various entities have learned to exploit the funding stream. publishers are the worst culprits - playing dirty politics at the highest level, propaganda engines at full throttle, draining money from the system at multiple weak points and providing negative value.
  • self interest interacts with the previous two to foster a closed culture where privilege prevails
  • almost all the incentives in the system are misaligned with the goals of science - bad behaviour is completely explained by the incentives
• openness solves so many problems:
  • keeps us honest - something people are reluctant to admit they need
  • fosters community
  • enables iteration and improvement of resources
  • exposes inefficient entities (e.g. publishers)

this needs more thought and organisation
