You would have to elaborate on that, since I didn't play Diablo 2.

In Diablo 2, the runeword system is a unique and intricate mechanic that allows players to enhance their equipment by combining specific runes in predetermined orders. Runes are special items(stones with word) that drop from monsters, chests, and other sources in the game. Each rune possesses its own individual properties. To create a runeword, players must place the runes into the sockets of a specific item in a specific order. When the runes are correctly combined, they form a powerful runeword, granting the item unique and potent attributes not found in regular gear. The effectiveness of a runeword depends on the runes used and the type of item it is applied to. Different runewords can be used on various item categories, such as swords, axes, and maces, each providing distinct bonuses and effects. The higher the difficulty level of the game, the greater the chance of obtaining more valuable and potent runes, resulting in stronger and rarer runewords.

The runeword system in Diablo 2 adds depth and complexity to the game, encouraging players to strategize and seek out powerful combinations to enhance their gear and overcome challenging foes. Runewords system definitely breathed new life into the game and became its most intriguing element.

In Diablo 2, there were 33 runewords, and the higher the difficulty level, the greater the chance of obtaining more valuable ones (1 - weakest, 33 - strongest and rarest). Naturally, runewords granted different bonuses depending on the item category, whether it was armor or a weapon.

An random example:

"Oath" runeword is composed of the following runes inserted into an item in the given order:

Shael (lvl 29) bonuses: weapons 20% increased attack speed / shields: 20% faster hit recovery Pul (lvl 45) bonuses weapons: 75% damage to demons, armors: +30% enchanted defemse Mal (lvl 49) bonuses: Prevent monster heal, armor: magic damage reducted by 7 Lum (37 lvl) bonuses: +10 to energy / +10 to energy (in diablo energy=mana)

Individually inserted, they should simply grant their properties to the items, but when creating a runeword, the item would receive unique properties.

30% chance to cast level 20 bone spirit on striking Indestructible +50% increased attack speed +210-340% enhanced damage (varies) +75% damage to demons +100 attack rating against demons Prevent monster heal +10 to Energy +10-15 magic absorb (varies)

I believe that your mod is the perfect foundation for this system :) Of course, the types of runes, their properties, names, and runewords are limited only by imagination.

PS: In D2, there was also an item called " Horadric Cube," similar to your cubes, player could combine runes together or with some of the items, for example, granting them the maximum number of sockets or enchant item to magic, rare, unique.

Please check the Internet for several examples; there are plenty of runewords available, and some of them can be really interesting, like providing hp bonuses for multiple party members in the form of shouts (an ability of the Barbarian class).
