Sfc pressure in METAR converted to SYNOP reports #3

Open blaylockbk opened 1 year ago

blaylockbk commented 1 year ago

NCO provided “site table” believed to be used by the METAR-to-SYNOP converter. Some stations providing SYNOPS do not appear in either the site table or hard-wired in the code. Confirm this site table actually used by the software. Update the site table to correct any errors found. How close are elevations in this “site table” to the elevations provided by the BMT when it converts TAC SYNOP to BUFR?

"NCO-provided Site table requires reprogramming to fix errors but doesn't have reprogramming capability. Need to find authoritative source who handles site table. BMT cannot do conversion. Walter will check if IBL can do – in scope of IBL contract. The problems with the METAR-to-SYNOP conversion include the following: PP 1) identifying the correct site table so corrections can be made. 2) METARS are going away, so SYNOPS (or their BUFR equivalent) will need to be made from IWXXM messages. 3) The new SYNOPs (or BUFR equivalent) will need to transition to use WIGOS identifiers. The last word from NCO (as I recall) is that they have no budget for dealing with this. 3.9.22 NCO IDSB Onboarding team is assiting with this request and will keep NCO DM in the loop."
