SIGWX Object - Tropical Cyclone forecasts #3

Open blchoy opened 5 years ago

It is understood that in the future XML version, tropical cyclone forecasts will be taken from TCAC advisories. There are, however, issues to be resolved which include:

  1. The forecast TC positions in the advisories provided do not cover the additional forecast times of SIGWX charts to be introduced, and automatic generation of additional forecast TC positions through interpolation for example could be erroneous.
  2. The CB clouds on the SIGWX chart in association with a TC deriving from the model may be inconsistent with the forecast TC positions in the advisories.

WAFCs are trying to resolve them.

By the way, inconsistencies could have already occurred between the wind/temperature chart and the SIGWX chart, the former coming from the model while the latter from the forecaster. @GAndrsn may I ask if there are currently any adjustment to align the two?

During yesterday's discussion with WAFCs some participants pointed out that a client display may be displaying a SIGWX chart together with TC information from separate IWXXM TCA which could be more informative and up-to-date because the latter has a more frequent update cycle, therefore there may not be a value for WAFS SIGWX forecast to include TC information.

While we have no control on how end users are using information they received, the act of putting information together to form a collective (or report like METAR, etc.) should involve underlying concepts and philosophy, methodologies and procedures with reference to certain targeted use cases. We may want to re-visit the use cases before drawing a conclusion.

Having said that, In the future SWIM environment users can based on their own use cases to develop their own concepts/philosophy, methodologies and procedures to collect relevant information for their operation. That's why we need more metadata to help users choose the right information.
