URL you wish to be added:

sanctioned-suicide[.]net - Active
sanctionedsuicide[.]site - Active
sanctioned-suicide[.]org - Suspended (serverHold) by the domain registry on November 6, 2023

Why you believe this should be added:

Issue Description:

We would like to request the addition of two website domains associated with Sanctioned Suicide (SS) to the blocklist for "drugs".

These domains have been identified as platforms that promote and discuss suicide methods, including those involving substances and gases, as mentioned in the analysis conducted by the University of Padua. The analysis highlighted the presence of methods such as Hydrogen Sulfide, Sodium Azide, and Nembutal on the Sanctioned Suicide forum.

Given the nature of the content on these websites and their potential harm to individuals, it is necessary to add it to the blocklist.

Background Information:

These platforms are notorious for advocating and endorsing suicide, an act that is not only deeply damaging but also illegal in many jurisdictions. The activities endorsed by these websites have been associated with numerous fatalities globally, thereby posing a substantial threat to vulnerable individuals, especially our youth.

These websites have been the subject of international concern, with various governments and global authorities taking decisive action to curtail their accessibility. Actions have been taken by the Australian Federal Police, German authorities, Italian prosecutors, and others in recognition of the severe harm these websites inflict.

The following are some of the actions taken:

In April 2019, the Australian Federal Police blocked the original .com domain name of Sanctioned Suicide under Section 313 of the Telecommunications Act 1997.

In March 2020, the site was barred from online search results in Germany.

In June 2021, Italian prosecutors blocked access to the site following the suicide of two Italian teenagers.

In December 2021, seven bipartisan members of the U.S. House of Representatives wrote to Attorney General Merrick Garland seeking clarification on possible actions against the site under U.S. law.

Following a bipartisan statement from the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Bing lowered the site's ranking in its search results.

Uruguayan law enforcement launched an investigation against one of the site's founders, Diego Joaquín Galante, in response to a New York Times investigation.

Media coverage on this issue has been extensive:

A New York Times investigation linked 45 members' suicides to the website, with subsequent reports finding even more.

In October 2023, BBC News identified 50 people in the United Kingdom who died in connection to the site.

An Australian ABC News investigation reported on the suicide of an Australian man who was goaded and suggested to film his death by members of Sanctioned Suicide.

A PBS overview of the New York Times investigation highlighted a minor who was encouraged on the site to take his life using a specific method.

We acknowledge and appreciate your commitment to safeguarding users from malware, phishing, and other cyber threats through your service. However, we firmly believe that this protection should extend to websites that pose a significant risk to mental health, particularly those that explicitly endorse harmful and potentially illegal activities like suicide.

Other info you think we should know:

The presence of websites like Sanctioned Suicide, which openly discuss and encourage suicide methods, poses significant harm to online users. These platforms can have a detrimental impact on individuals who may already be vulnerable or struggling with mental health issues. By providing a space for the exchange of detailed information on suicide methods, these websites can potentially facilitate and normalize self-harm behaviors. This can further exacerbate feelings of hopelessness, isolation, and despair among individuals who are already contemplating suicide. Moreover, the exposure to such content can potentially trigger and influence vulnerable individuals, pushing them towards dangerous actions. It is crucial to take proactive measures to restrict access to these harmful websites in order to protect individuals and promote a safer online environment.
