And the problem was that the Roomba was sitting on the dock with a dead battery, and so wasn't talking to anyone. Once it showed up in the iRobot app, it also started talking to Homebridge.
Same issue with my 891, moved the roomba off the dock, fully charged and active, but no change on homebridge.
