I made an upstream request to change the way disabling the main toolbar is handled. https://sourceforge.net/p/smplayer/feature-requests/709/

There very likely is a workaround though?

There is, use a different GUI (interface), one that doesn't have toolbars. Well, at least according to this post: https://forum.smplayer.info/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=43#p1025

Everything else I've tried so far has not worked.
