pidgin requires an additional package to be installed, see http://www.webupd8.org/2014/01/pidgin-indicator-ubuntu-appindicator.html
I've just tested the instructions that Martin posted on a pristine kubuntu install (latest image), and now I get the systray icon for pidgin.
The procedure is not exactly straight-forward, (it needs a package currently in a non-standard PPA, and then be enabled in pidgin's config), but works.
that fixed it indeed! thanks mgraesslin, sebas.
some gtk2/gtk3 icons still missing despite following this guide: http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2014/06/where-are-my-systray-icons/
