PDF Out of Date #4

As of this writing the downloadable PDF (from https://nostarch.com/deep-learning-visual-approach) is the second printing (with all the second printing errors / errata). Why is the third printing (without the errors / errata) not available for downloads?

As a side note, my company has ordered two printed books (one from Amazon and the other from the no starch website), both printed versions are third printing (without the errors / errata). How can the printed version be more up to date than the digital version!?

I am posting this here because the no starch guys will not respond to emails so hopefully the author is monitoring these posts and is able to do something about it.

Thanks.

Hello,

I'm sorry you haven't been getting responses from No Starch. They're usually quite good about customer service, so I don't know what the problem might have been. The reply email provided by github is pretty strange - I hope this gets through. In the future, it might be worth including your personal email in the body of your message so you can be sure of receiving responses.

As far as I'm aware, the second printing is the most recent one. I've not been told about a third printing. The errata page I'm maintaining works this way: the first printing came out, and I collected the errors people reported to me. The publisher told me they were doing a second printing, so I fixed all the errors I were aware of. Since then, people have pointed out additional errors in the second printing, and those are on the errata page.

Do your printed books literally say "third printing"? If so, again, that's news to me.

Hello,

There is definitely a third printing (see screenshot below). After doing some spot checking, looks like some of the reported errors on the second printing were fixed on the third printing but I see now that not all the errors were corrected.

If you don't mind me asking, why is the PDF book not kept up to date by fixing all the errors as soon as they are found? One of the biggest selling points of the digital copy (among many other benefits) is that it should be very easy to fix the errors and publish the new and updated version in a timely manner. Is that not as easy as it sounds?

Hi,

I don't know the answers to your questions. They are definitely legitimate

Thanks for the image. I definitely agree that the book seems to be a third printing! That's news to me.

Be aware that my job is to write the book - the printing, the distribution, the website, the PDF, its maintenance, and so much more is the publisher's domain. So I don't know why the PDF and the printed versions aren't synchronized. And I don't know the answers to any of your other questions. I do know that publishing is a complex business, and there are a lot of issues involved I'd have never guessed at that influence what they do and why. I'm particularly puzzled that some of the errors were corrected in this third printing. I don't know how that happened, or why they weren't all fixed. I'll ask, but apparently the deed is done, so it's more out of curiosity at this point than anything else.

I'm sorry you now have the hassle of reconciling the 2nd printing errata with your 3rd printing version. I hope it's not too troubling.
