I have a ping-viewer patch to pick up ping360, but it will work anyway if you do a manual udp connection from device manager with port 12345

What do you mean? via ethernet or bridged serial?

just plugged into the network with pi serving it a dhcp address. Secondary (not default) network interface on the laptop. no serial, no bridge.
