German Translation #1720

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

No, there was no request like this before.

I would like to have all Strings related to the Apps/Webapp in a .po file so I can translate them into German and commit them here.

Describe the solution you'd like

A .po File or any other filetype where I can translate all of the Strings for apps and Webapp to commit here so Germans will have a translated App/Webapp.

I want to be able to translate everythin within the app/Webapp to German.

Describe alternatives you've considered

There are multiple services out to engage the community to translate a project.

Alternatively: Translate alle String with Deepl.com and let native speakers vote for translation to get implemented.

Additional context

I am willing to translate everything for free to German if there was a file with all Labels/Strings of the app.

Also there is a back-icon in Android App which could need a little more padding since the Chevron is directly at the circle border.

Thank you for your generous offer. This is definitely on the roadmap! Will send a comment here when we have a translation system in place for you to contribute to.

WIth today's 1.6.1 update the translations added in PR #2266 were released, but the translation has a lot of issues with consistency and terminology (within the app and also with terms used on other social media platforms) and simply correctness. A lot of translations sound wrong and make no sense. Tbh. I think it should be completely redone with a German native speaker.

Three examples:

In parts it sounds machine translated, like here "handle" is used in the sense of door handle but the word "Änderungsgriff" doesn't make any sense at all.

https://github.com/bluesky-social/social-app/blob/7e3e6caa1020c6894008dd14ef6ce0e2555920c0/src/locale/locales/de/messages.po#L377-L379

The usage of "Posten" for post is wrong, and then gets mistranslated in some places to roughly mean classified ad

"Benachrichtigungen" (Notifications) text causes sidebar to overflow with a small scrollbar

The currently state of the German localization is actually very bad in some key places (e.g. misleading action labels) and in my opinion pushing it to production was done prematurely (see #2316).

A PR (#2319) has been opened which I started to review, but it also still needs a lot of work.

There are some locale-specific decisions which might need further discussion and are required to be agreed upon before a consistent translation can be achieved:

FYI @pfrazee said that the agency is doing an emergency rework of the translation:

They did, it was still bad, they're fired.

Apologies if this isn't relevant, but have you considered using something like Crowdin to manage volunteer-contributed translations? Maybe with an agency overseeing the final output?

As a follow-up, I see that some Ukrainian users are using it for the Ukrainian translation of Bluesky:

Given the German translation has been released this might be able to be closed now.

Also, I have opened #2917 to bring the German localisation fully up-to-date by filling in translations for all the strings that are currently untranslated. Any feedback on how to improve those translations would be gratefully received 🙏
